WEEK 1 @ INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP AND IMAGING

LECTURE

In our first week, we were introduced to our lecturer, Mr. Martin. He briefed us on the module information including the assignment and the application that would be conducted for the whole semester, the photoshop. One mentioned, the modules are like putting your "imagination" into your artwork.

1. WHY YOU NEED TO LEARN PHOTOSHOP
Adobe Photoshop is the reason why numerous professionals like graphic designers to web designers prefer using this application. Graphic style and also digital photography is one of the most typical. Understanding Photoshop is necessary if you operate in a visuals style, website design, or individual experience function.

2. IMPORTANCE OF PS TO GRAPHIC DESIGNER
  • Express your creativity
  • Create graphic design
  • Restoration of old images
  • Integrate graphics with text artistically
  • Make use of brushes
  • Change photo color
  • Rectify mistakes in photographs

PRACTICAL

For the weekly task, we have been tasked with:

  • Prepare printed materials for physical collage.
  • Register in Pinterest. Share 3 photoshop works that you like
  • Play Bezier Game.

THE BEZIER GAME

Fig 1.1 The Bezier Game Screenshot

Fig 1.2 The Proof of completion

As a new user of Illustrator and Photoshop, this game was both fresh and challenging for me. The aim of the game is to help us develop a notion of how to use the pen tool. However, it is really interesting. It is a type of game, inspiring self-spirit to gain better or higher grades (nodes) as a proof that "I finally can control the pen tool!"

THE PINTEREST ARTWORK

 # ARTWORK 1 :

Fig 1.3 artwork from Pinterest (week 1 / 31.03.2022)

When I first saw this piece of art, I was immediately attracted to it. The artwork appears to convey to the viewer some instructions or meaning about "life is a book; we record our journey, including success and failure, in the book."

I was surprised when I went to the website to check what the author's true meaning was. When I went to the website to investigate the author's genuine intention, I was startled. The photograph was offered as a caption for the audience to comment on. One commenter, Yerchaning, said, "Layer by layer, I discovered myself." I like the meaning that the words offer, which suggests that the author may discover more about herself by reading the books, page by page. One also mentioned, "My mind is full of stories to tell." "A few may know." an open book! You may turn pages or skip, read and comprehend, or drop when not interested! by Ren E. Lyn According to my perspective, the caption conveys the sense that she is a person who enjoys meeting new people. She is "open" to meeting new people who share her interests, but "close" to someone who does not share her interests.

 # ARTWORK 2 :
Fig 1.4  "Pepper and Shoe" by Stephen McMennamy (week 1 / 31.03.2022)

The second artwork was created by Stephen McMennamy and is titled "Pepper and Shoe." Stephen McMennamy is an Atlanta, Georgia-based photographer and art director who likes to create funny photo collages. He skillfully combines images of everyday objects in order to turn them into something new. He named the artwork "Pepper and Shoe," with the caption, "What a hot and spicy heel, isn’t it?"

I really appreciated the idea of how he used pepper to convey the shoe. The artwork appears to be a "small chilli" in Chinese, which symbolises an attractive lady.

Stephn M.'s other works can be found at: https://weandthecolor.com/photo-collages-by-Stephen-Mcmennamy/75879

 # ARTWORK 3 :
Fig 1.5 Artwork by Chrissy H. (week 1 / 31.03.2022)

The last artwork that has been explored is the artwork by Chrissy H. From the artwork's perspective, it seems to show a sense of desperation. As for the pupils of the eyes, which might be illustrated as a moon, they also delivered a sense of loneliness and depression. In fact, when one is holding back tears and not sobbing, the pupils will rise. Despite how the world goes, the galaxy shines, or the ocean blows, we are lonely, as the author only created one sail box, or she might have delivered the message that "we must be brave to meet all the struggles in life."

Chrissy had also captioned her artwork, "Eyes speak the unsaid words." "You need to be a good observer to understand them." So, I agreed with her sense of her artwork, as her artistic details drew my attention and compelled me to think about it further.

WEEK 2 @ INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION

LECTURE

1. INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION
How does the designer know their design will be accept or interested by others?
  • Focal Point

A key element to a good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of your design first.

  • Scales & Hierarchy

Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward

and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.

  • Balance the elements

A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it. Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly coloured elements.

  • White Space

White space is mostly known as "empty space" to balance up the main focus of a composition. White space can help boost design’s clarity and balancing out the more complicated parts of your composition with space that helps your design to breathe.

Fig 2.1 Sample of 'White space', lecture slide (week 2 / 07.04.2022)

2. RULE OF THIRDS
The Rule of Thirds is the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. When you position the most important elements of your image at these intersection points, you produce a much more natural image

The Rule of Thirds is a way to :
- creatively use negative space
- create conversation between the subject and background
- Use composition techniques in line with what's naturally pleasing to the eye.

Fig 2.2 Sample of "rule of third", lecture slide (week 2 / 07.04.2022)

3. GOLDEN RATIO
The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

In design, the Golden Ratio creating and appreciating a sense of beauty through harmony and proportionThe Golden Ratio is a useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout.

Dimensions =  1:1.618

Fig 2.3 The Golden Ratio, Lecture Slide (week 2 / 07.04.2022)

PRACTICAL

For the practical session (week 2), we have been tasked with doing the pre-composition for our task 1, physical collage. We are required to compose 3 pre-compositions. As having limited materials, I use to cut out a girl or an artist who sitting on the ladder, discovering her arts.

Fig 2.4 the moment of progress (week 2 / 07.04.2022)

As having limitation in materials, so I use to create a girl drawing her design world with a caption, "How does design exist?" in order to show a sense that design is all around us.

Continued exploration was recorded in this section > PROJECT 1 : THE COLLAGE

WEEK 3 @ INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP

LECTURE

1. INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP
a basic introduction to Lasso Tool, Pen Tool and Layering.

  • Tools Box
Photoshop provides several tool sets in the toolbox, and users can expand the tools sets to reveal additional tools.

  • Lasso Tool

The lasso tool allow user to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document. There are 3 different tool options:

  1.      Lasso
  2.      Polygonal Lasso
  3.      Magnetic Lasso

Fig 3.1 lasso tool in Photoshop (week3 / 14.04.2022)

  • Pen Tool
The pen tool is the most common option when it comes to creating a path from scratch.

  • Layering

Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. The advantage of using Layers is that you can save a Photoshop file with all the layers included. This means you can use layers for non-destructive editing. The adjustments in Photoshop will never destroy the original image.

TUTORIAL

During the class, we were also tasked with trying out the tools in Photoshop, masking several tables onto a provided background. My attempt on Photoshop :

WEEK 4  @ INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP 3 // ADJUSTMENT LAYER & FILTERS

LECTURE

1. ADJUSTMENT LAYER
What is Adjustment layer?
The Adjustment Layers in Photoshop are a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to image without permanently changing its pixels. With the adjustment layers, we can edit and discard the adjustment or restore the original image at anytime.

Basic understanding of Adjustment Layer

When add an adjustment layer to your image, a new layer will appear over your image and a Properties panel specific to the type of adjustment you've selected will pop up.

  • Brightness / Contrast
Fig 4.1 brightness/contrast

Brightness / contrast makes adjustment to the tonal range of your image. The brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights in your image and the contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image.

  • Level
Fig 4.2 adjustment on levels

Level modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtowns and highlights. It's one of the most used tools in the adjustment layer panel, and just a touch of levels will go a long way in correcting your images.

  • Curves
Fig 4.3 adjustment on curves

Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image, and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in a image.

  • Exposure
Fig 4.4 adjustment on exposure

Exposure lets your adjust exposure levels with three sliders : Exposure, Offset and Gamma. Exposure will adjust only the highlights of the image; Offset adjust the mid tones; Gamma adjust the dark tones.

  • Selective color
Fig 4.5 adjustment on selective colour

The selective color adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary colour without modifying the other primary colours in the image.

2. FILTERS
What is filters?
Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe's graphics editor. There are filters to change colour, add blur or create completely new image effects. Photoshop offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

TUTORIAL

In this week (week 4/21.04.2022), we had focused on the digital imaging exercise - The Hearst Mansion and My reflection.

At first, we been given some sources to be refer and Mr. Martin walked us through the exercise by using Shazam as an example. We had tasked to follow the quick tutorial that provided to understand how to use :
  • Quick selection tool
  • Layer Mask
  • Filters
  • Color Correction

THE HEARST MANSION

Fig 4.7 Final outcome of Shazam (week 4 / 21.04.2022)

Fig 4.8 Final outcome of Shazam in Hearst Mansion attempt #1 (week 4 / 21.04.2022)

Then, based on Shazam exercise, we are tasked to create the same steps but replaced the Shazam's layer by own photo. We are instructed to take a photo of ourselves using the right lighting techniques, apply the Shazam's exercise technique and apply the colour correction to finalise the work.

Full exploration was recorded in this section > PROJECT 2A : DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE

PRATICAL

On week 4, Mr. Martin disturbed a task on applying filter and layer adjustment on our selected digital collage :

Fig 4.9 digital collage #filtered (week 4 / 24.04.2022)

On my 1st attempt, I tried on the curves effect to more the image in a blue form. And I began my 2nd attempt which having a notion on filter it to show a sense of old.

Fig 4.10 layer adjustment and filter (week 4 / 24.04.2022)

The collage appears to be more alive and appealing once the filter and effects have been added. For example, after adjusting the curves, the purple mountain became the hue of earth. The addition of a blue backdrop as a representation of the sky made the photographs more fascinating and related. To provide a sense of the old, I used a noise effect to make the car and even the building blurrier, evoking a sense of the old technology

Full exploration was recorded in this section > PROJECT 1 : THE COLLAGE

WEEK 5 @ DOUBLE EXPOSURE

LECTURE

1. DOUBLE EXPOSURE & IMAGE BLENDING MODE
What is Double Exposure Photography?
Double exposure photography refers to merging multiple images. The goal is to make them surreal, emotional or humorous. They usually feature silhouettes.

The Function of Double Exposure Photography

  • Using the Tilt-Shift Effect
Fig 5.1 tilt-shift effect

Photoshop has a great tilt-shift tool that will transform your photos into soft works of art. If you want to be extra creative, blur one of your photos instead of the entire image.

[Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift]

  • Create a fake reflection.
  • Experiment with simple portraits and details that are textured.
  • Convert your results to black and white.
  • Work with a silhouette
  • Pick two random photos.
  • Make simple objects look fascinating.
  • Use shadow

PRATICAL

During the class (week 5), we were introduced to the project 2B - double exposure. At first, we are tasked to done the double exposure followed by the given tutorial video :

LECTURE
Fig 8.1 - 8.2 samples of photo manipulation (week 8 /16.05.2022)

Definition
Photograph manipulation involves the transformation or alteration of a photography using various methods and techniques to achieve desired results. Widely accepted as an art form, photo manipulation requires skill as well as an active imagination to create an illusion.

Objectives
Develop imaginative & creative idea.

PRATICAL

We are required to get some idea development during the week. This week, we are having a session of photo shooting in studio.

Full exploration (Project 2C ) was recorded in this section > PROJECT 2C : Conceptual Product Photoshop

WEEK 9 @ DIGITAL SURREALISM

LECTURE

REALISM VS. SURREALISM

Realism
Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."

Surrealism
A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality.

Fig 9.1 samples of surrealism (week 9 / 26.05.2022)

Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.

Dadaism
Fig 9.2 samples of dadaism (week 9 / 26.05.2022)

What is Digital Surrealism?
Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves. In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.

How to start create?
1. Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
2. Unexpected, illogical juxtaposition
3. Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
4. Primitive or child-like designs

TUTORIAL

This week, our tutorial are focusing on the blending mode. I had experienced some blending mode based on the tutorial given by Mr. Martin.

Below are the exploration that followed by the tutorial given :

1. BLENDING OPTION #SCREEN

Fig 9.3 - 9.4 photo of girl with coffee and steam (week 9 / 26.05.2022)

WEEK 10 @ INTRO TO AFTER EFFECTS

LECTURE
Fig 10.1 After effects, application (week 10 / 02.06.2022)

What is After Effects?
Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects and motion picture compositing. After Effects is used in film, TV, and web video creation. This software is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. This allows you to combine layers of video and images into the same scene.

Adobe After Effects takes a different approach for creating movement. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story. You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

TUTORIAL

In this week, we are advised to download the application, Adobe Aftereffects (AE).

At the very first, click [file> import].
1. Change footage to composition, import as composition
*if import in footage, it will convert in a single layer.

Fig 10.2 Replace footage to composition (week 10 / 02.06.2022)

2. Choose the [editable layer] instead to merge the layer so that the file would show a separate layer and we can make adjustments separately.
