MODULE INFORMATION

INSTRUCTION
Double exposure. Students use specific skillsets from photoshop to blend their portrait with layers of background image.

EXPLORATION

EXERCISE : DOUBLE EXPOSURE PART 1 - FOLLOW TUTORIAL

During the class (week 5), we were introduced to the project 2B - double exposure. At first, we are tasked to done the double exposure followed by the given tutorial video :

Fig 1.1 materials given (week 5 / 29.04.2022)

Followed by the tutorial, I had cut out and mask the portrait :

After the portrait been masked, I started the double exposure journey by adding the filters, adjustments on the layers according to the tutorial video given.

EXERCISE : DOUBLE EXPOSURE
PART 2 - OWN DOUBLE EXPOSURE

The journey of exploration in double exposure on my self-reflection is depicted below :

At first, I flipped back my photo albums to select the best portrait to start this task. I selected some previous portrait and start the journey on removing the backdrop.

#1st attempt >

Fig 2.1 - 2.2 selected portrait and image (week 6 / 02.05.2022)

The initial notion is to create a double exposure photography by the two selected images above. First and foremost, I remove the backdrop of the selected portrait by using the selection tools, masking the layer.

Fig 2.3 Portrait without backdrop (week 6 /02.05.2022)

Fig 2.4 insert the image (week 6 /02.05.2022)

The initial notion is to create a double exposure photography by the two selected images above. First and foremost, I remove the backdrop of the selected portrait by using the selection tools, masking the layer.

Fig 2.5 composition  (week 6 /02.05.2022)

As I wish to make the double exposure more connected to the backdrop so, I tried the features on layer and adjustment :

Fig 2.6 layer & adjustments  (week 6 /02.05.2022)

Fig 2.7 After adjustments  (week 6 /02.05.2022)

To make the composition more interesting, I insert a flock of birds and create a backdrop for the artwork :

Fig 2.8 adding flock of birds (week 6 /03.05.2022)

Fig 2.9 adding backdrop (week 6 /03.05.2022)

Moreover, I felt a bit empty on the connection within the backdrop and the upper part of the portrait. So, I make some adjustment on it :

#2nd attempt >

Fig 2.12 - 2.13  Selected portrait and image #2 (week 6 /06.05.2022)

First and foremost, worked as the step above to remove the backdrop of the selected portrait by using the selection tools, masking the layer, finding the best composition :

Fig 2.15 transform the composition (week 6 /08.05.2022)

Fig 2.16 selected portrait without backdrop (week 6 /08.05.2022)

Fig 2.17 insert the selected image (week 6 /08.05.2022)

I like the idea of connecting the portrait to the background, so I keep selected images emerging from the portrait and blending into the background, creating the feeling of a double exposure.

Fig 2.18 double exposure (week 6 /08.05.2022)

Fig 2.19 double exposure (week 6 /08.05.2022)

I even make some highlight on blue at behind he portrait to create a sense of shadows / highlights from the view perspective.

Then, it's time to add some elements to make the composition more interesting! I even insert some trees to create a better layout :

Fig 2.20 insert the 'tree' (week 6 /08.05.2022)

Fig 2.21 place in the best position (week 6 /08.05.2022)

I felt that the trees was too contrast in the artwork, so I adjust the colour balance from normal to 'luminosity', making the colour between the new element with the portrait is more connected and balance.

Fig 2.22 after 'luminosity' effect (week 6 /08.05.2022)

Fig 2.23 outcome of attempt 2 (week 6 /08.05.2022)

After adding the elements to the artwork, its seems to be more interesting, full and alive. But, I felt that the group of bird is a bit weird and small instead, so I made some changes on it :

Fig 2.24 changing the 'birds' (week 6 /08.05.2022)

Fig 2.25 Final outcome of 2nd attempt (week 6 /08.05.2022)

After comparing the two attempts, I chose the first one since it appeared more natural in expression whereas attempt 2 is more complex? And, I did some adjustments on the color background too :D

FEEDBACK @ WEEK 9 /26.05.2022
An interesting double exposure outcomes. But if I want used the 1st attempt of outcome, I might need to rotate the road, which directly shows the direction of the road go upwards to your throat. Instead, in this moment, Mr. Martin prefer and suggest to pick the 2nd attempt of outcome as my final submission as it presented a more completed double exposure.

After receiving feedbacks from Mr. Martin, I gained the true meaning of double exposure, I decided to submit the attempt #2 as my final submission.

REFLECTION

Throughout the double exposure project, I believed that we would need some time to learn the capabilities and functions of Photoshop because the shortcut keys and function ways vary from those of Adobe Illustrator. However, after being familiar with the scope and capabilities in Photoshop, the experience of creating the double exposure on our own is far more intriguing and liberating.

Despite a decent layout or composition offering a better view, I experienced Photoshop's incredible and outstanding power. A new colour adjustment, or even a modest, basic modification on curves by 0.01px, revealed distinct sensations in the photos. Thus, I experienced with the quotes, 'a good photography leads people's emotions'. The combination of a good composition as well as filters and layers adjustment will make the photography more interesting and alive. Overall, I am quite enjoying myself in the assignment, which combines my favourite memories in a new way, with new knowledge.
