PROJECT 1 : THE COLLAGE

MODULE INFORMATION

EXERCISE 1 : PHYSICAL COLLAGE

INSTRUCTION
Step 1: Cut out design elements
Explore and search for any interesting graphics from old magazines or any printed materials. Cut the shapes of pictures that you are choosing. Repeat the steps to collect your cut out design elements.

Step 2: Pre-compositing
Find an interesting background canvas. Start compositing the cut out design elements and play around with the composition and layer arrangement.

Step 3: Final composition
Once you’re satisfied with your pre-compositing, start glueing the cut out based on the layer by layer arrangements. Document your work in progress on each step and upload it to your E-Portfolio blogs for the weekly contents update.

EXPLORATION
For the practical session (week 2), we have been tasked with doing the pre-composition for our task 1, physical collage. We are required to compose 3 pre-compositions. As having limited materials, I use to cut out a girl or an artist who sitting on the ladder, discovering her arts.
Fig 1.1 the moment of progress (week 2/ 07.04.2022)

As having limitation in materials, so I use to create a girl drawing her design world with a caption, "How does design exist?" in order to show a sense that design is all around us.

But after I had additional resources, I altered my approach and decided to do a fashion collage, which provides a feeling of fashion, in modern. After trying out some composition, finally I complete my 1st composition.

#1 PRE-COMPOSITION :
Fig1.3 Pre composition #1 (week 2/ 10.04.2022)

The idea that brings by this composition (fig 1.4) is showing a sense of modern architecture and the fashion. I love the paper "don't get yourself in a knot" which showing the sense that "don't thinking inside the box" in this composition. If the situation allowed, why don't you combine both architecture and fashion?

But after severals exploration on instagram and Pinterest, I had tried my second and third composition.

#2 PRE-COMPOSITION :
Fig 1.5 Pre composition #2 (week 2/ 10.04.2022)

Without skipping the paper quotes, I continued to compose a new style in which I randomly rip off the paper to show a sense of messy in fashion. I added on a paper which contains lots of fashion logo in my composition to show the contrast of the fashion in it.

#3 PRE-COMPOSITION :
Fig 1.6 Pre composition #3 (week 2/ 10.04.2022)

In my third composition, I tried by random insert the materials that previously left out or used to show a sense of fashion too. The logos of brand, apparel, watch, shoes showing the contrasts of the modern fashion in the composition.

FEEDBACK @ WEEK 2
Mr. Martin suggests that the final composition be #3 Pre-composition since it has been ruled more effectively. The layout and colours showing they are work together. But for #1 pre-composition, it appears to be unrelated to each other.

EXERCISE 2 : DIGITAL COLLAGE

INSTRUCTION
Based on the video tutorial, create one digital collage using the materials provided. Follow and complete the weekly progress.

EXPLORATION
At first, before the digital collage, we had been introduced to the Adobe photoshop. During the practical class on week 3, we are assigned to create 3 composition for the digital collage with the materials that provided.

Fig 2.1 materials (week 3/14.04.2022)

At first, I had no idea on how to digitalise the collage, and I random insert to make the collage.

Fig 2.2 progression (week 3/ 14.04.2022)

Fig 2.3 progression (week 3/ 14.04.2022)

After some discovery and exploration, I finally complete my 1st composition in which showing the nature of the environment, having the nature beings - human, plant and animal.

Fig 2.4 draft 1 (week 3/ 16.04.2022)

But I felt that the composition is boring and not meaningful, so I try more attempts to figure out the best composition.

#COMPOSITION 1 :
Fig 2.5 Composition #1, digital collage (week 3/16.04.2022)

The notion of this composition (fig 4.5) is showing a sense that the fencer is using his sword to attack the shark on to the buildings. But, I feel that the composition seems simple so I had a try to create composition 2 & 3 by inserting more elements into.

#COMPOSITION 2 :
Fig 2.6 Composition #2, digital collage (week 3/16.04.2022)

#COMPOSITION 3 :
Fig 2.7 Composition #3, digital collage (week 3/16.04.2022)

In composition #3, my notion is to make the fencer "flying" with the paper plane from the TV to catch the shark.

FEEDBACK @ WEEK 3
Mr. Martin suggests that the final composition be #3 Pre-composition as the digital collage of #3 is more interesting.

On the following week, week 4, Mr. Martin disturbed a task on applying filter and layer adjustment on our selected digital collage :

Fig 2.8 digital collage #filtered (week 4 /24.04.2022)

On my 1st attempt, I tried on the curves effect to more the image in a blue form. And I began my 2nd attempt which having a notion on filter it to show a sense of old.

Fig 2.9 layer adjustment and filter (week 4 /24.04.2022)

The collage appears to be more alive and appealing once the filter and effects have been added. For example, after adjusting the curves, the purple mountain became the hue of earth. The addition of a blue backdrop as a representation of the sky made the photographs more fascinating and related. To provide a sense of the old, I used a noise effect to make the car and even the building blurrier, evoking a sense of the old technology.

REFLECTION

Overall, the adventure is enjoyable, informative, and informative. During my four weeks of digital photography and image discovery and adventure, I realised the importance of Photoshop to a graphic designer or even a photographer. A good filter or composition will shape the photographs in a way that entices visitors to explore or learn more about the image.

During the collage activity, I saw firsthand how collage may help us uncover our creativity. Making collages is a sort of creative therapy that everyone can practise. Many individuals, including myself, have a mental block when it comes to sketching or painting, but cutting out magazine photographs, adding scribbles, and colouring them is more like child's play. There's no need to be concerned about the final masterpiece being assessed. This natural process is extremely calming and restorative. It can disclose our subconscious, give light on a problem, or assist us in seeing the composition or ideas in a new way.
