PROJECT 2B : DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE PART 1 - SHAZAM

In this week (week 4/21.04.2022), we had focused on the digital imaging exercise - The Hearst Mansion and My reflection.

At first, we been given some sources to be refer and Mr. Martin walked us through the exercise by using Shazam as an example. We had tasked to follow the quick tutorial that provided to understand how to use :
  • Quick selection tool
  • Layer Mask
  • Filters
  • Color Correction

THE HEARST MANSION

Fig 1.2 The final outcome of Shazam (week 4 / 21.04.2022)

 Fig 1.3 Outcome, Hearst Mansion attempt #1 (week 4 / 21.04.2022)

Then, based on Shazam exercise, we are tasked to create the same steps but replaced the Shazam's layer by own photo. We are instructed to take a photo of ourselves using the right lighting techniques, apply the Shazam's exercise technique and apply the colour correction to finalise the work.

MY REFLECTION

Fig 1.5 My own image - after masking (week 4 / 21.04.2022)

Fig 1.6 My own image - positioning (week 4 / 21.04.2022)

Initially, my own image was positioned to the right, but Mr. Martin suggested that it be reflected to the left to create a more vibrant position in the Mansion background.

Fig 1.7 My reflection - outcome #1 attempt (week 4 / 21.04.2022)

Overall, I think the exercise is really amazing, and I can see how, even though it's only a minor arrangement within the filters or effects, it pulls out a completely other colour or emotion from the image itself.

Feedback :
The shadow seems to dark and not so nature, make the shadow lighter.

So, I take the second attempt in order to make the shadows appear more realistic. I also detailed the work to replace the above-mentioned incomplete exploration.

At first, remove the background by using the selection tools, we can press "+" or  "-" at the control bar to resize the selected area.

By checking the details of the selection, use shortcut key [command w/ +] to zoom in.
Select All by using [command + A]

Fig 1.8 selection tools (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

To copy and paste the Shazam to the heart mansion (the background), using shortcut key [command + c] as copy and [command + v] as paste.

Fig 1.9 paste Shazam in the background (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

To resize or make the size more suit on Shazam to the background, use shortcut key [command + T] to free transform. In order to make the ratio move together, adjust with shift key.

Fig 1.10 placing Shazam (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

In order to 'zoom back' to the original size, use shortcut key [command + o].
To make the Shazam looks more realistic, we should adjust the color, reflection and add on shadow for him, making the images more believable.

Matching the color - select the Shazam layer and [images > adjustment > match color]
There are three things that we can adjust :
1. Luminance - adjust the brightness of the image
2. Color intensity - adjust the saturation of the image (how strong the color u need)
3. Fade - fade the amount of adjustment (how much u want to blend)

Fig 1.11 matching the colour  (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Shadow - create a new layer, renamed it as shadow, place it below the layer of Shazam.
use the brush tool [B] to draw some shadow for Shazam.

Fig 1.12 brush the shadow (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Then, lower the opacity of the shadow layer, and adjust the filter [filter > blur > Gaussian Blur]
Fig 1.13 Gaussian Blur  (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Reflection - duplicate the layer of Shazam for the reflection, drag the original layer.

Fig 1.14 duplicate the layer  (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Use the pen tool to cut out the needed part, and mask it :

To adjust the color of the Shazam's reflection, making it more alike as the reflection in the water. To darker the reflection, [image > adjustments > brightness/contrast].

Fig 1.17 darken the reflection (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Blur down a bit [filter > blur > Gaussian blur] and adjust the hue [image > adjustments > hue/saturation]

PROJECT 2A : DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE PART 1 - MY REFLECTION

After complete the Shazam, then I continued the journey on insert my own image, my self reflection. And, the journey are documented in below :

Despite already having the mask at previous attempt, I try to mask again to achieve better masking. At first, I remove the background, and mask out the hair.

Fig 2.1 remove background (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Then, I transformed the image to the Hearst mansion background, and positioned in a right position and size.

Fig 2.2 insert the image (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Fig 2.3 positioning (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

To make my self images to be more realistic and connected with the background, I adjust the luminance, color intensity and also the fade to match the color with the background.

Fig 2.4 adjusting the colour (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Moreover, to make the image more real, standing at the side, I added shadow for it. As having guidelines from the previous tutorial, I used the brush tool to draw a shadow and use the Gaussian blur to blur the shadow, lower the opacity.

Fig 2.5 brush the shadow (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Fig 2.6 after the Gaussian blur (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

To make the image reflected in the water, I duplicate the layer and horizontal it to form a reflection. By using the same methods as the guided tutorial, I use the peen tool to mask the desired part.

Fig 2.7 reflected the image (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

Fig 2.8 after the masking (week 7 / 14.05.2022)

At last, to make the reflection more believable, I adjusted the color by lower the hue and saturation.

REFLECTION

Throughout Project 2A, I experimented with Photoshop's effects and filters. Various values will elicit different emotions. Even a variation of 0.1 will have an impact on the final output. A good Photoshop completed project needs a number of set stages. The effect is likewise different when what should have been done in the first step is relocated. Overall, Photoshop is a highly skilled software that takes more time to study and understand.
