This lesson, Design Principles, might be considered my first design-based course. When I agreed to take the course, I didn't expect it to be simple. I had previously studied communication theory, and I had the impression that "principles" were merely something I needed to memorise. There should be a lot of terms to keep track of. However, after attending the module class, I had a different point of view.
From words to visuals, inspiration to creation, everything in the design world is linked. Before attending this course, I understood that everything was made up of designs, but I never realised that the background of a design encompassed so much information and theory. I believe that the achievement that I gained is that my capacity to observe has increased after attending the class. For example, in real life, I will pay closer attention to commodities, people, objects, and minor details that I have previously overlooked in order to identify their design aspects and what designers seek to bring out in feelings.
Rather than learning design principles, I'm having a fantastic time experimenting with new ideas and being inspired. When I look at my own paintings, I get the impression that they are speaking to me. For example, in the self-protait project, I exhibit various versions of myself. As a result, it is possible to say that I discover myself in the paintings, and they reveal to me what I enjoy, what I will do every time, what I crave, and what type of future I desire. I really appreciate the effect of this project; it truly helps me know myself better when I research myself and know exactly what I want.
In addition, I discovered what type of person I am through all my paintings. For example, my painting "the frozen love" in exercise 1 taught me that I am a person who values family above all else, constantly prioritising family and feelings for the adage "home is your permanent safe haven." Also, through the sense of place, I learnt how essential that trip to Langkawi was to me.
Second, I recognise that design principles and my own way of thinking may differ from those of others. What I perceive may not be seen by others, or even what others perceive may not be seen by me. I need to clarify my arguments and concepts, as well as reinforce my design components, to make my viewers understand my way of thinking towards the artwork. I appreciate that every time Dr. Charles asks me, "What do you prefer?", he allows me to select the pieces I want to make and develop my own style, rather than helping me to decide my style. As in my previous lesson, the lecturer will not give you the right to choose the final work.
Overall, I had a good time throughout the whole process! It's unfortunate that I can't meet and talk with my classmates and lecturer physically due to online instruction, but that's fine. I hope I will be able to communicate with them next semester!
Last but not least, I'm appreciative to my lecturer for allowing me to begin courses early and for providing feedback throughout the process; otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the achievements even reflections at all! 👐
