Self-Portrait
👉 In short, self portrait is a self-representation in any creative form including painting, drawing, sculpture, design, etc. It is a visual depiction of the self.
👉 A self-portrait artwork represents how the designer sees himself, and what he feel, or how he wants people to perceive him about.

Self-portrait is not necessary to show the real face of the self, may in a more creative form.
PROJECT 1 @ SELF PORTRAIT
MODULE INSTRUCTION
INSTRUCTION
Create a portrait of yourself by applying the various principles that you had learnt through these weeks.
VISUAL RESEARCH
After receiving this task, I took lots of time on exploring "myself" and try to create something to define "me". So, I looked back on my albums and checking on my special trait or memories for an idea exploration. At first, my idea is to create a cartoon version of me.
Figure 4 : idea exploration
When I look back on this portrait (figure 4), I feel the memories and happiness of "me" on the moment. So, I decided to use this as my idea exploration to create my self-portrait artwork.
Figure 5 : idea exploration sketch 1
Mind map of me (JACQ) :
Video Review
Video 1 : Video preview on mind-mapping
After the mind-mapping, I had an idea to make an artwork to combine few past memories, social position, experience, thoughts, interest, etc into an artwork in order to form a varieties of "me". Then, I started to illustrate lots of "me" in different angles, memories, style and emotions.
Figure 7 : idea exploration 2
Figure 7 above showed the idea to form the artwork "variety of me". I decide to create 16 memories for 16 columns.
Below are the illustration of particular memories, interested etc of me, even some stories:
Figure 8 : the column 1, work experience
The first column in the 16-grid is to present the memory while I worked as a yogurtisa (yogurt barista) in Yomie's Yogurt in the year 2019. It is my first job in my life and even push me to grow. This is the place I met a group of "gila" person that we shared up and down together and even our relationship is maintain good, or excellence till now!
The memories were amazing and this is the place help me to improve my social communication ( I am an introverted before, and as I had endured violence in friendship for three years, causing I refused to meet new friend). But, my first job experience brought me a group of true friendship and more confidence!
"This is a selfie that my colleagues captured with me, showing our efforts on arranging the full stock(S)" 💭
Figure 9 : the column 2, throwing stress
The column 2 showed on "how I throwing my stress or depression." Mostly, I will found some high KCAL stuff that I often eat such as yogurt, milk tea, kari mee (some unhealthy food) to reduce my stress. I found that eating high KCAL food may decrease my depression and move me back to normal.
My thought ; high KCAL foods can reduce my depression. 😏
Figure 10 : the column 3, selfie
During this age of technology and the power of social media, selfie is everywhere. I captured the moment that I selfie in front of the mirror.
Figure 10 showed my current physical trait, a short curly hair. 😆
Figure 11 : the column 4, OOTD
This was a picture that I captured before my hair cut, a last pic for my long hair.
The memory was the day my family and I had been invited to visit my siblings' new place, which is a new modern condominium in my hometown, Sarawak.
The scenery and environment is so amazing! Unfortunately, it was a rainy day. But, ,y family and I also created lots of memories there and even captured some "stupid" pictures for memories!
The emotion on the day was : happy but some disappointed as we could not swim on the day 😢😭
Figure 12 : the column 5, grocery time
I rarely or not even went to grocery shopping during the day of pandemic. But, this day was the first time I went for grocery shopping. The aim was to buy some foods and drinks for the steamboat night!
It was a long lost for us ( my previous colleagues in yomies) to have a meet up! :D
We were craving for steamboat day for a long time after we leave the position.
"This is a random shot of them for me to record my 1st grocery day during pandemic!"
The emotion and thoughts : " I am lazy to makeup, we should buy fast and go! "
Figure 13 : the column 7, receive a flower
Figure 13 showed the moment I received a bouquet of flower on my 20 birthday. This bouquets was given my best friend, saying to make up the gift of 7 Years (we have known each other for 7 years).
This was the most popular bouquet style on the moment! AND I love it very much
Emotion: SO surprised! A person that never send me gifts, gifted me a bouquet of flowers, cakes and even a gift 😩😱
Figure 14 : the column 8, OOTD
Figure 14 showed my fashion style after I had my hair cut.
This was captured at a coffee box, named "Coffee in a box", which located at Bintagor, Sarawak. It took around 1 hours drive to the place (it is a long distance for Sarawakians) and it was a place I craving for 1 year!
Emotion : EXCITED, but I want it to be "COOL".😎
Figure 15 : the column 9, photo shoot
This memory was captured on the Christmas Eve, 24th Dec 2021. My family and I had a family photo shooting session on the day. And, it was a shot on my self-portrait.
The aim to insert this illustration into my artwork is to show " The me after makeup and dressing". Every girl having a deep dream on being a "princess". 👧
Figure 16 : the column 10, tired
Figure 16 showed I am tired, dazing. It was captured while I recording a video presentation on "Self culture report". It was a screenshot on the video before I started recording.
Emotion : tired but having a "fake smile" for a emotional management, telling myself, "You can do it!" 💪😇
Figure 17 : the column 11, OOTD
Figure 17 showed the memories that I met my friends during the pandemic. It was the first meet up since the lockdown and we having lots of fun that day :D
And, as I worked as a coffee barista, I am interested on trying the varieties tastes of coffee. It was the first time I ordered Iced Americano (coffee drinks) in a coffee shop.
I love the sourness (tastes) of the Americano that served by the coffee shop, The coffee code. The staff (my past colleague) also taught me some knowledges about coffee, " Put the ice cubes first before the espresso. The ice cubes will make the espresso dissolve faster and lower the bitterness of the coffee." 😮😮🙊
IT is the day I fell in love with Americano. ☕
Figure 18 : the column 12, birthday
This was the memory of my 19th birthday, before the pandemic. It was a surprise birthday and the most surprising was my friend make the cake for me! 🍰
Emotion : Cherish on having these group of friend, still remember my birthday although we all graduated from secondary school 💕
Figure 19 or the column 13 showed I am craving for coffee! Instead of Americano, I love flat white (Flat foam, no sugar with double shot). I am craving to try the coffee all around my place!
" I AM A COFFEE LOVER " 🙋
I am a person who loves visiting cafe or coffee shop so much. Sometimes, I will worked in a coffee shop with my laptop.
In the moment of the pic, I was busy exploring ideas for a design ppt project.
Figure 21 : the column 15, with mask
Random recording on the pandemic moment, wearing a mask. This illustration showed the physical appearance when I wore a mask. 😷
Figure 22 : the column 16, schooling
Figure 23 is a portrait of myself on attending physical classes during my foundation in 2019, the moment before the pandemic.
And, this is added to my artwork is to portray a role of me, a student or a Taylorian.
Current thought : Hope I can back soon! Hope the day for physical class came soon, craving for waffles and karipopsssss, and duckie 😣🐥
Above are some short stories on my thoughts, memories, emotion that I love it, and I combine all 15 stories (memories) into a piece of artwork, but with a blank frame for a new memories :
Figure 23 : draft artwork 1
I inserted all the illustrations of myself and create this piece of draft artwork. I decided to fill them with colours and the draft artwork 2 was formed :
I showed the progress to my friend and during the class session :
Feedback by my colleagues :
It really looks the same as you!
You must try to create more of this, looks so great!
Feedback by my friend (KJ) :
Amazing! but will be more amazing if you draw one for me NOW.
Feedback by lecturer (Dr. Charles) :
He suggested to remove the text. The artwork is showing many poses of you, intentionally showing emotion of you. This is your style of self-portrait on having multiple self, repetition with dissimilar poses in each frame.
And, I even added on the blank frame with my current job position, a cafe barista in my hometown :
Figure 27 : the column 6, barista position
Figure 27 showed my current social position in the society, a staff of a floral cafe in town, Flōs. This is my first part time job while studying. I did enjoyed the moments while working there .🍵☕🌸
The cafe means lots to me, it is an opportunity for me to get closer to my dream. As, I had planned for art latte and floral workshop before I entered the cafe. And, my boss even gave me opportunities to work with design.
Here, is the place pushed me to do "the things that I initial wanted ---- study design courses". The place given my lots of confidences and chances to show myself and lets me know the "deep idea" for my passion and future.
Thoughts : "THANKS FLOS, it had able me to gain more "brave" to follow my heart."
After having the 16 grid of full frame illustration, I completed the illustration with a white background :
Figure 28 : Final Outcome
Although I did try a few arrangement to form the artwork, but I felt to have a more neat and guided column to fit in my memories. I showed the progress to Dr. Charles regarding my points for the arrangement.
Feedback by lecturer (Dr. Charles) :
I like it. If you prefer this arrangement then go for it. Also I assume that every version here is connected.
FINAL OUTCOME AND SHORT RATIONALE
Figure 29 : Final Outcome, PDF
The artwork contains 16 past memories that consisted with my experience, thoughts, interest, etc in order to form a variety of "me" in different poses, angle, style and emotions.
The artwork was designed in repetition. Repetition often use repeated patterns in order to make a design to show more interesting in many different effects. Throughout the artwork of my self portrait, it consisted of variety of "me" but in a dissimilar patterns and rhythm ( poses and emotion). The variety of patterns are keeping the artwork to be more live and active in order to grab audience attention to think more about it.
In addition, I used the artwork to create a sense of unity. Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout the design whether in different colours, shapes or materials to pull the look together. Unity are portrayed in the artwork in which showing the variety of myself but give a sense of oneness (all are a same person), creating a theme of "my self portrait".
REFLECTION
Throughout the project, I had explore more about myself, what is the passion of me and the things that I really pay attention to. Besides, i concluded the pandemic had brought me lots of memories and even new interest, the coffee. I am a non-coffee lover before, but after worked in this industry, I try to explore more about them, and even fell in love with coffee tasting.
Besides know myself better, I go one step further in discovering the unique of design. Despite what is formed in the artwork, it might be a combination of design principles and design elements. For example, the repetition are use to make my design artwork to show in many different effects, keeping the rhythms exciting and more active, and even attractive whereas unity make my artwork to be more balance and in a theme.

I absolutely like this! Its bold in a unique way and filled with intention! I would have asked you - why the choice of colours or line work. But i know you will not budge! This here is a statement for yourself and I am glad you decided to compose it this way. Good dissimilar repetitive arranegmnents with some variety!
ReplyDeleteThe reason I have colour and line work for the artwork is the idea of the basic design elements that I learnt during week 1. It is the combination of three basic elements: line, color, and space. I would like to create something in order to show the minimalist style of artwork.
