LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 7 @ Sense of Place (The importance of observation)

Introduction to Project 2 by Dr. Jinchi
Observation :
👉 Designer observe to visualise a design.
👉 observation can be an effective way to get ideas.
👉 Observing is an active act of acquiring information, through the senses, of a subject matter in its natural setting.

Tips for Sense of Place
👉 Now think about the place you're in now, or a place you had spent some time at previously, or, a place that had created a lasting memory in you.
👉 How do your express your sense of that place?
👉 Start by documenting your observations - photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.

PROJECT 2 @ SENSE OF PLACE

MODULE INSTRUCTION

INSTRUCTION
Through this project, students once again are required to utilise and apply the design principles they have learnt to date in order to express a location of their choice. The place becomes the subject of the composition in which the design principles are applied to capture the social and environmental aspects, and even the time/s effects that will best express their intention /interpretation for a particular location. This requires the students to move beyond the classroom to the outer world and to employ their skills in capturing and communicating a complex relationship.

Requirements :
Observe your surroundings such as people, vehicles, buildings, plants, signages, nature, activities. Record these in sketches, photography and/or video recording. Study all the visuals that you had collected. Select visuals that you find relevant and interesting to you, which you can
translate into a design work that reflects your interpretation of a place.

Remember to apply design principles in your work. For materials, you may use any of your choice, but do consider their suitability to best express your idea.

VISUAL RESEARCH
After watching the pre-recorded lecture by Dr. Jinchi, I started to recall back my memories by observing the photographs in my album. I found some photographs that contain memories and decided to play something with them.

I pick the best moments (photographs) which captured before the pandemic :

Figure 1 : Visual research, a photo that captured with aircraft in a close-up shot Aa

It's my secondary school's graduation trip to Langkawi during the year 2019. I picked this, because it seems very difficult to capture this scenery (a scene which captured with aircraft up close) with friends, even before the pandemic. And, this photograph showing nobody wearing mask, showing the happiness and relax of us to have the trip. 🙈😏

The sense of the place :
- The sense of happiness with friends to travel
- People get off the aircraft with the sense of relax (without mask, free of virus)
- The weather of the day seems good, same as our's emotion.

IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION
My idea is to trace the moments into an artwork. With the same idea as self-portrait, using lines and colours to show the sense of place.

Below is my 1st sketch on the picture :

Figure 2 : Idea sketch, lines

I try my best to insert all the elements which showed the sense of place to the artwork. I insert the "traveller" such as couples, mother, friend, solo to the artwork is to show the idea, every traveller take this plane for a different purpose, such as for business, vacation, leave of absence. For us, we aimed for a memories to end our secondary school.

I filled colours for the artworks by using HB pencil (brush tools in Procreate), to show the texture of the artwork :

Figure 3  : outcome

This is the outcome of the memory and I showed the progress to Dr. Charles for some feedbacks.

FEEDBACK
It looks like a fun pic. Your intention seems like to show the fun moment with friends in the airport before the pandemic. That's a good title and you may focus on insert more moments on traveling with friends to show your sense of the place.

After receiving the feedbacks from Dr. Charles, I try to improve the artwork by adding on some landmarks of Langkawi. I do refer some reference online regarding the landmarks of Langkawi :

Figure 4 : Reference of Landmarks, Eagle Square

Figure 5 : Reference of Landmarks, Cable Car

Figure 6 : Reference of Landmarks, Beach

After the research, I decided to add the three elements into the artwork such as the eagle (eagle square), the cable car (Langkawi Skycab), and the coconut tree (beach). And, below are the latest outcome after the improvements :

Figure 7 : Draft Outcome 2

I sent the new outcome to Dr. Charles through Telegram and mentioned that I had combined the eagle square & cable car ride into the artworks , even the coconut tree (illustrate the beach). It is represent the landmark of Langkawi.

FEEDBACK
In your latest development, you have your friend in same position and also other parts  of Langkawi in the background. Your technique is interesting but you may do something with variety. I can feel your sense is to show variety of the adventure you had in Langkawi, but you seem to be stuck with the four of you in front of the plane. You may added on more moments during the trip, showing you guys in different appearance like different clothes in different places.

The background of the Air Asia plane can be a little bit more blur so that you can bring the four of you a little bit more clearer. You may frame more moments in the sense of place. For example, the moments in the beach wearing swimsuits, jungle trekking with backpack, etc.Your approach or technique is good, but if you want to show variety, it's variety now, but it's not enough variety, focus on variety.

If you want to maintain this, it is acceptable as there were many details inside. But, maybe larger the four of you more as it will be more focused on yourself and add more details in the background. You may add on more elements on the background such as flowers, crocodile etc but make sure the background shall not overpower four of you.

After receiving the feedbacks then I attempted to do the second improvements on the artwork. In this meantime, I wanna to do something with scale, symbol and emphasis instead of variety or repetition as I think the limited time is limited my idea exploration.

As the limited time had limited my idea and progress, so I insert two moments with "people in different clothes" into the background which framed two more scenes in the artwork :

Figure 8 - 9 : idea exploration memories

1# the moments depart Langkawi, captured at the airport.
2# the moments in the beach, we selfied.
3# the moments at the eagle statue, we took a group photos with the statue (the symbol of Langkawi)

Figure 10 : Draft Outcome 3

I even make the background more blur to make the four of you ( the main character) to be more contrast, avoiding the background elements to overpower us.

FEEDBACK
Take a bit more risk and add variety. The current reframing and add ons make it more interesting compared to the previous one. Nice carry on and complete it.

After receiving feedbacks from Dr. Charles, although having limited time to create more variety, I would like to try to create as more variety of memories into the artwork. So, I search the old photos and decided to frame one more scene on the moments in Wildlife Park Langkawi.

Figure 11 : moments in Wildlife park Langkawi

Figure 12 : Wildlife park Langkawi

As the logos of the park behind is not so clear, I search for a clearer images for reference. And, the new artwork is created :

Figure 13 : Draft Outcome 4

I felt the empty on the space in the middle, so I searched the old photos again for idea exploration. Finally, I found one (and I recalled Dr. Charles got suggest on insert one portrait to the artwork too) then I try to use it to fill the spaces.

And, the final outcome :

FEEDBACK
See how you linked them, that's why it creates more interest. Harmony and variety would good for themes of friendship or social events. Much better! 👍

FINAL OUTCOME AND SHORT RATIONALE

Figure 16 : Final outcome, PDF

The design was created to show the sense of place in Langkawi, showing the sense of joy and adventure with a group of friends during a Langkawi trip before the pandemic. The main frame is the moment in the airport, capturing a memory with an AirAsia plane, and later, with more moments popping out, such as the moment at the beach, skycable, eagle statue, sailing at Kilim GeoForest park, and visiting the wild animals in Wildlife Park Langkawi.

The artwork was created using design principles such as scale, symbols, emphasis, and variety. Throughout the artwork, the weighing scale is used to show a visual measurement. People can see that the scale in the artwork is not the same as in reality, such as the eagle statue being shown larger than the people, which is bigger than in reality. Furthermore, the four people in front are bigger than the aircraft too, showing that the artwork is captured in a close-up shot to focus on the people instead of the background. There are many symbols shown in the artwork too, such as the logo of Malaysia's flag, the logo of AirAsia plane, the landmarks of Langkawi, the code of aircraft, which shows the moments in Langkawi Airport, Malaysia. Emphasis is used by blurring the background and adding more dark colours to contrast with the main character and the four people in front of him. The sense of variety is also shown in the artwork by having various moments with friends in different clothes, poses, emotions, and shooting methods, landmarks in Langkawi. Lastly, the variety linked to a creation of harmony, showing the friendship theme on grouping all the different moments in Langkawi.

REFLECTION

Throughout the project, I felt that time management was very important. Because the project was dropped during the week of Chinese New Year, it appears that it will be more difficult for me to finish on time or even decide on the idea exploration. But, thank Dr. Charles for delaying the due date. It can be said that I had high stress during the project week due to having a lot of work projects on Valentine's Day and assignments at the same time. I even had to attend a lot of invitations to Chinese New Year celebrations. Now, I'm glad that this project has ended. To conclude, I should take good risk on time management in my future adventures (assignments) so that I will be more free and relaxed to complete them.

Furthermore, I discovered that I had gained more insights and exploration about design principles as a result of the project. Although it took me a longer time to understand the idea of Dr. Charles's stated variety, I do thank this project for giving me the opportunity to understand more about variety. Moreover, I have tried multiple design principles to make the design artwork more interesting, and I even used the idea of principles such as scale and symbols in my outcome, in which scale is shown by the size of the statue of the eagle, which is bigger than reality, whereas symbols are everywhere in the artwork, such as the eagle statues and skycable, which symbolise the landmark of Langkawi. In conclusion, the project has improved my idea of thinking about design principles and even brought me to a better idea of exploration as well as artwork.
