LECTURES
#WEEK 1
For this particular week, module information briefing was been conducted.
Intercultural Design Lecture #1: Culture, Design & Research
#Important Notes :
1. In design, research is important to unite theory and practices of design to establish your project rationale.
2. For our project, we need to focus on 3 stages :
➜ Before writing the project proposal
➜ After producing the proposal
➜ During the creation of artwork
In addition, during the week, we had given a quick artifact and culture critic via Padlet.com.
Use the design system to explain :
1. Breakdown of festive Money packets for CNY?
Money packets, or known as a hongbao in Mandarin is a gift of money inserted into an ornate red pocket of paper. They are given on some important occasions, such as Chinese New Year, birthdays, and weddings in China and some other Asian countries as a way to send good wishes. The color red symbolises energy, happiness, and good luck in Chinese cultures. Traditional red envelopes are often decorated with beautiful Chinese calligraphy and symbols. Actually, the significance of red envelopes is the red paper, not the money inside. Wrapping lucky money in red envelopes is expected to bestow more happiness and blessings on the receivers.
2. Expansion of colour significance in Chinese Culture?
In Chinese culture, red symbolises energy, happiness, and good luck while white symbolise funerals. People usually did not designed or send ”hongbao” in white which destroying the identity of the red packet should be have.
3. What is the issue with this Ang Pow packet design?
The issue that this Ang Pow packet faced was the designed in white which more suitable in terms of funerals instead of Chinese New Year.

PROJECT 1
MODULE INFORMATION
Intercultural Design - Project 1 : Proposal
INSTRUCTION
We are required to study a cultural phenomenon, or a particular subculture, and “frame” our study within the chosen theme to convey our interpretation / adaptation of the culture without having to alter the actual facts as the same information is used as a based. We also required to produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express interpretation using design language. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale. Conduct visual research to help expand the idea generation. The general theme is "Visualism –Visual Culture".
EXPLORATION
➜ Week 1
After the briefing session, we had instructed to form a 6-pax group in having members from different semester with the ratio 4:2 or 3:3. I joined a group of 6 which consists Pei Yun, Jia Hui, Yan Ling, Sylvia and Jian Xiong. Since 6 of us planned to join the Tokyo study trip, we decided on focusing the Japanese culture so that it will be more easier for us to do the data collection.
After the class session, we scheduled a meeting (11 Jan 2023) for our topic discussion. Our team leader, Jiahui had created a google drive folder to organise all the information for our group project. We are required to think about the potential topics that we are interested for future exploration.
#our decided potential topics
Fig 2.1 Potential topics (week 1/ 11.01.2023)
And, our decision was :
#Idea 1 : Japanese Fortune (Physical prototype)
@ build a “lucky-miao” design concept of gachapon machine which consists of contents including the elements that symbolise Japanese Luck and fortune as well as a fortune slip (O-mikuji) via hands-on.
#Idea 2 : Japanese Fortune (Digital prototype)
@ build a “lucky-miao” design concept of gachapon machine which consists of contents including the elements that symbolise Japanese Luck and fortune as well as a fortune slip (O-mikuji) by website.
#Idea 3 : Summer Festival clothing
@ promote the culture by using paper doll (one of the Japanese culture)
Then, we divided into 2 groups to deeper research on the selected topic/ scope which Jia Hui, Jian Xiong and I responsible for the #idea 1 & 2 whereas the others focusing on the #idea 3. We are required to complete the research before the next meeting (15 Jan) to final decide for our project proposal.
I did some research and documented my progress of the ideation 2 sketch under the pdf below :

➜ Week 2
Continued after the second meeting, we discussed and final decision on what should we focus on, and prepare on our first presentation slide draft for our moderator's feedback and clarification.

Feedback _ week 3 / 20.01.2023
Explore on the value of gachapon for anticipation with the practice of dispensing fortune and luck. Start figuring out ways to gather data and which info would best help you create your project to be more interesting. Try to think about focussing on life as a student and what kind of fortune and luck do you guys think would help you feel better in your studies.
➜ Week 3
After received the feedback from Ms. Anis, we scheduled a new meeting time (25 Jan) to discuss about the ideation of "student life". We came to an ideation, fusing both cultures and decided to come up with a Gachapon machine that dispenses an o-mikuji alongside a KitKat chocolate bar. The KitKat is a popular abbreviation for the coincidental false cognate phrase “kitto katsu”, meaning “ a sure win”. This is extremely popular among Japanese students during exam season, as it represents a token of good luck. With that in mind, the KitKat included in the gashapon not only serves as a lucky charm but also doubles as a gift to friends and encourages students to build potential relationships as it is common to split a KitKat bar in half to share with loved ones.
We added a special touch to our o-mikuji, which includes not only a maneki-neko that represents good fortune at the front, but a daruma doll at the back. The Maneki-neko is a symbol of luck and different colours represent different aspects in life. We designed a set where the colour of the maneki-neko will represent the contents of the o-mikuji drawn. The Daruma doll on the back will have empty hollow eyes, as it is a common practice to draw an eye only when you make a wish, and the other when your wish comes true. We hope that the o-mikuji also serves as a wishing token for students to make a wish, and keeping them accountable as they hold onto the paper until their wish comes true.

➜ Week 4
Since this week is our presentation week, we scheduled a meeting for the final compilation and split the task; the presenter as well as the "behind the scenes". In a very "lucky" way, we used the lucky wheel to decide who will be the presenter and ended up of the "lucky" me. I was one of the presenter, which in charge of the ideation 1.
We made the presentation slide wise, and did several rehearsal before the presentation day and our final outcome was documented in the files below :

Feedback _ week 4 / 02.02.2023
1. Concerns with physical gashapon prototype due to time constraint, suggests to focus more on digital approaches
2. Suggest to work in mechanisms such as shaking in apps/games
3. Focus on translating the thrill of drawing a gashapon on screen
4. Suggests to document our feelings & experiences of drawing gashapon during data collection in Japan
To be continued to Project 2 : Data Collection

REFLECTION
During the whole process of creating the proposal, I really enjoyed it and looked forward to the final result. Six of us convened in a naturalistic way, established a group, and discussed our plan together. Our group project experience is excellent since everyone is actively contributing to our final findings and expressing their thoughts and opinions. Rather than presenting an objective and serious plan, our group wanted to provide a lighthearted, enjoyable, and creative production that showcased our creativity and possibly leave a small positive impression on our academic careers. Additionally, It seemed expected that we would meet challenges during the process, such as having too many viewpoints to determine, struggling in the way to offer our ideas in a more creative manner, and so on. The most unique aspect was that our group used a fortunate wheel application to allocate our jobs in order to convey the phrase "trust your luck; your luck will determine your job." 🤯
Furthermore, throughout the planning phase of this project, I have noted that each nation has its own distinct visual culture waiting for everyone to discover; without this subject, it can be stated that difficult for me to know that Japan has this sort of
fantastic
visual culture. And, I can't wait to see the final result (wish is upon our expectations)! 🙆♀️🤍
