PROJECT 2
MODULE INFORMATION
Intercultural Design - Project 2 : Data Collection
INSTRUCTION
We are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile artefacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artefacts and materials must be recorded, kept and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artefact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural/historical background, and more, depending on the kind of artefact and material.
EXPLORATION
➜ Week 4
During the week 4, before we departed to Japan for data collection, we planned to conduct a meeting to finalise our ideation and the locations that we seeks to visit. Prior from that, we are instructed to keep an eye on the interesting places that might help us in collecting the data. After our discussion on the day (4 February), we finalised the potential locations and documented under the PDF below :
Fig 1.1 Potential locations & schedule (week 4/ 04.02.2023)
After considering the probable places and the information we anticipated getting, we directed jumped into the trip mood! 🙆♀️
➜ Week 5
This is the week we travel to Japan for the study trip.
The full journey & reflection documented in Japan Study Trip.
➜ Week 6
After travelling back to Malaysia, we started to pack our feelings and compile our data collection. Before we start to compile the data collection, we received some observation and advise [General feedback] from Mr. Asrizal :
General Feedback _ week 5 / 10.02.2023
1. Your data collection artefacts should have substance. What do we mean by that? Basically, the artefacts collected should not be presented in entirety without any rationale /explanation of the artefacts presented in your deck.
2. Artefacts can be in any forms; photos, videos, observation write up, physical artefacts like packaging, books, brochures etc and any related forms.
3. Artefacts collected should be bridge the information between your proposal and your proposed final output.
4. What we don't want you to do is just to put in all the visuals your have without any rationale or explanation to each one.

After receiving the general feedback, we start to finalise and compile our data collection. We organised all the photos (data collection) into the google drive folder :

During the class hours, we are required to bring our artefacts to the class for feedback. And, we received the feedback from our moderator, Ms. Anis :
Feedback _ week 6 / 14.02.2023
1. Think hard about the rationale when writing descriptions for data collection
2. Translate your experience, thrill and excitement into the prototype
3. Think about the feelings you want your prototype to evoke in others
Continued after, we proceed to write up our observational studies. The compilation of the data analysis :
Fig 1.3 Data analysis, PDF (week 6/ 17.02.2023)
Since we felt that we should included our new design concept which related to the final prototype. We did some final sketch-up here in order to show it as a proof and outcome of our data collection. More to show in Final Project : Prototype.
After the full development and progression, we finally ended up with our final outcome of data collection :

To be continued to Final Project : Prototype

REFLECTION
Throughout the data collection process, it was an honourable experience as we got the opportunity to travel to Japan for a study trip. Overall, the data gathering procedure was pretty entertaining and eye-opening; I truly encountered a lot of Japanese visual cultural aspects. Moreover, since this was a "designed" group project, it was difficult to design the final product to meet the consistency because each individual had a distinct understanding of design ideas as well as design thinking. Yet, thankfully, we were able to develop together, plan our final output, and tolerate differing viewpoints in order to get the most finest and united result! ✨
