TASK 1

MODULE INFORMATION

Application Design I - Task 1 : Mobile Application Proposal

INSTRUCTION
Students are required to create a proposal documentation for their mobile application project. We are required to redesign an existing app that you find unsatisfactory in terms of the user experience or interface design and its subject to preliminary approval by the module coordinator. Students need to do surveys, interviews, market studies and research on the selected topic. The document should also include key features of their mobile application and provide clear flowchart of the app. The document will determine whether or not the mobile application idea is good to continue to the next development phase. This task is an iterative process whereby during the assignment period, students are free to get feedback from their peers and module coordinator to further refine their idea.

Choose an area within the theme of lifestyle that we wanted to focus on and propose three mobile applications that we had the intention to redesign. Rationalise the ideation and describe the background of the mobile applications.

EXPLORATION
After receiving the task, I began brainstorming and researching which application I should pursue. I did some research on the App Store, researching some of the popular applications, and finalised three of the applications that I intended to redesign, with the premise that "they should not look like this."

#Proposed Ideation ðŸ’¡
1. Entertainment : MBO Cinemas
2. Shopping : IKEA Shopping
3. Food & Drink : Starbucks Malaysia

After deciding which applications to explore, I began to compile some rationale and research about the chosen applications to showcase / for an easy references. (in case the module coordinator inquires about why and what).

During the class session [week 2], Mr. Shamsul had instructed us to insert our ideation into Miro board and share the files to him in order to have a better engagement or direction towards the potential application. But, since I had done the research document, I showed it to Mr. Shamsul during the class hours and received some feedback :

Feedback _ week 2 / 14.04.2023
Overall, your concept was great. However, your objective on Ikea, indicating that IKEA simply wants a product list or name beneath the product categories but no visuals on the product listing, considered poor UX, is inaccurate. In fact, sometimes it is OK to omit visuals from the list because the use of multiple graphics could complicate the user experience. However, let us go with MBO Cinemas since you have more aspirations towards.

After obtaining comments, I moved on to the next phase of my project development. While Mr. Shamsul suggested that I skip the ideation phase in Miroboard, I decided to proceed with it to maintain a balanced workflow.

After completing the development of three ideations, I proceeded to do some research and brainstorm to determine the content of the project proposal based on the criteria given. For this particular sections, I had spent some time to develop into it.

#Final Proposed Idea
Category : Entertainment
Application : MBO Cinemas

The MBO Cinemas mobile application is a platform that allows users to purchase movie tickets and explore movie showtimes for MBO cinemas, a cinema chain in Malaysia. The app is available for download on both iOS and Android devices and aims to provide a seamless and user-friendly experience for moviegoers. Users can easily browse movie schedules, view trailers, and purchase tickets with a few taps.

FEEDBACK

Week 2 / 14.04.2023 @ Potential Idea Proposal

REFLECTION

Throughout the entire journey of crafting the MBO Cinema mobile application redesign proposal, I can genuinely describe the experience as enjoyable. It marked the beginning of my foray into the world of UI/UX design, and I couldn't be more thrilled to create my very first application prototype. Opting for MBO Cinemas as my project choice was a deliberate decision, as I wanted to challenge myself by venturing beyond my comfort zone of minimalist design. In fact, from my current thoughts, the nature of the cinema application allowed me to explore darker and more realistic design schemes.

However, one of the notable challenges I encountered was my inclination as a design student to obsess over the aesthetics. Instead of completing the proposal in just a couple of days, I spent over a week deliberating on template selection. It became clear that regardless of the chosen template, I would end up investing tenfold the time to redesign the entire set to align with my vision. This issue had really pushing me into the snow balling effect as well as the lack of time management.

Ultimately, this proposal marked only the beginning of my UI/UX journey, as I am well aware that more challenges lie ahead. It provided me with a foundation to understand valuable insights and served as a stepping stone into the UI/UX industry. It was only the beginning, and I anticipate more challenges and growth in the future. JIAYOU LAH! 💪
