PROJECT 2

MODULE INFORMATION

Information Design - Project 2 @ Kinetic Typography

INSTRUCTION
We are required to choose a music and create a motion lyrics for it. This was conducted as a group assignment.

EXPLORATION
During the week 1, we are instructed to decide the music & art direction that we want to focusing and developing on. We worked in a group of 7, discuss the materials together and finalise the idea of choosing the MV : Made you look by Meghan Trainor.

Fig 1.1 Mood-board (week 2 / 18.01.2023)

After the ideation on the art direction, we had split the group in 7 which each individuals responsible to different parts of the lyrics.

The assigned Line (Line 24 - 27 & 42 - 45) :
➜  Yeah, I look good in my Versace dress (take it off, baby)
➜  But I'm hotter when my morning hair's a mess
➜  Cause even with my hoodie on
➜  Bet I made you look (said, I made you look)

Fig 1.2 Ideation & assigned lines (breakout) (week 3 / 29.01.2023)

Addition from the Capuche Trial Black font, I did some research on the potential fonts for my line (Versace).
#Versace font : Radiant

After having some ideation, I start my adventures in Adobe After Effects (AE) to create a draft for my assigned lines.

Fig 1.5 Assigned Lines, Draft (week 4 / 30.01.2023)

After viewing other teammate's version, I felt that I may create somewhat consistency and amend some lines that "delayed" :

Feedback _ week 5 / 02.02.2023 [individual part]
Adjust the opacity of the line (figure 1.7) to make the composition to be more smooth.

Fig 1.7 The mentioned "line" (week 5 / 02.02.2023)

After received the feedback, I make amendment on adjusting the opacity and finally ended up with the final outcome :

Then, I helped the group on the final compilation for the full music video and the final outcome of our project @ Kinetic Typography are shown below :

Made You Look by Meghan Trainor (week 6 / 14.02.2023)

Feedback _ week 6 / 17.02.2023 [Outcome Draft 1]
- The "walk walk" type seems to be a bit weird, suggest to amend it to having the sense of "walking".
- There is a part that having inconsistency spacing and kerning.

After receiving the feedback, our group did a quick amendment and finalised the final outcome :

Information Design - Project 2 @ Animation Chart

INSTRUCTION
Create a motion graphic chart. We are divided into 4 categories, in which different individuals will responsible for either one of the graphic chart (donut chart, pie chart, bar chart and line graph).

The assigned Animation graphic chart : Bar chart

EXPLORATION
After the practical session given by Mr. Martin, I get a direction on how an animation chart goes. Since during the practical session, I did not performed the data based on the task requirements, I summarise the data source and re-designed the bar chart.

Fig 2.1 Data summary (week 3 / 29.01.2023)

Fig 2.2 Ideation (week 3 / 29.01.2023)

As I having the intention to create the round border instead of a square and boring border, I refer to the YouTube video by Tom Ovenden as reference.

Fig 2.3 Line Cap, creating round border (week 3 / 29.01.2023)

# Solution:
Under the stroke (shape layer), there are a "line cap", change the option from "Butt cap" to "round cap" to get a round border.

Then, I continued to add text and slider as well as animated each of the layer :

Fig 2.5 Animation Bar Chart, Draft 1 (week 3 / 29.01.2023)

After finalising the draft 1, I sent the outcome to Mr. Martin for feedback. And I got the following comment :

Feedback _ week 5 / 31.01.2023
You may extend another 2 seconds so viewers can read the texts.

After receiving the comments, I adjusted the animation chart (extending the duration) to better suit the animation chart's flow.

# Solution:
[composition settings > adjust the duration]

Fig 2.6 Amendments (week 4 / 31.01.2023)

Along with the durational changes, I also added additional 3D character effects to parts of the text, which should help the animation run more smoothly overall.

Information Design - Project 2 @ Vector/ Character Animation

INSTRUCTION
We are required to create the vector or character animation based on the assigned task. We are divided into 4 categories, in which different individuals will be responsible for either one (A, B, C, or D) of the graphics provided.

The assigned vector / character animation : C

EXPLORATION
After the practical session on the vector animation given by Mr. Martin, I gained a better understanding towards the features. And, I started my adventures on the assigned vector.

At the very first, I ungrouped all the layer in AI :

Fig 3.1 ungroup all the layer (week 5 / 12.02.2023)

Then, continued by importing the full composition into AE and start animated it :

FEEDBACK

Week 5 / 01.12.2022 @ Animation Bar Chart Draft 1

You may extend another 2 seconds so viewers can read the texts.

Week 5 / 02.02.2023 @ Kinetic Typography [individual part]
Adjust the opacity of the line (figure 1.7) to make the composition to be more smooth.

Fig 4.1 The mentioned "line" (week 5 / 01.02.2023)

Week 6 / 17.02.2023 @ Kinetic Typography [Outcome Draft 1]
- The "walk walk" type seems to be a bit weird, suggest to amend it to having the sense of "walking".
- There is a part that having inconsistency spacing and kerning.

REFLECTION

Apart from the group issues that happened in Kinetic Typography, the experience was enjoyable throughout. Throughout the process of project 2, we had instructed on how to use After Effects generally (AE). Compared to the previous method, which included drawing in frames one at a time and transferring them into Photoshop for editing, AE is simpler and more efficient. Also, I found that alternative compositions, layouts, and transitions will give a completely distinct impression as well as elicit a different feeling in the audience. As a result, in order to craft the ideas, a rising number of plays must be reviewed to analyse their coherence and smoothness.

Also, this might be said to be the first group project I've ever had in my degree programme as a bachelor in design. I discovered that all person's creative thoughts have their own distinct points; if we want to generate the greatest and most consistent result, what we need is teamwork and communication to achieve the most efficient outcome! ✨
