PROJECT 1

MODULE INFORMATION

Information Design - Project 1 @ Instructable poster

INSTRUCTION
Create an infographic poster for ONE recipe selected from Pasta GranniesStudy one video, breakdown and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instructable poster. Try to capture each Grandma’s personality and unique dish identity in your poster as part of the narrative structure.

Poster size: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels

EXPLORATION
First and foremost, based on the requirement, I did some research on Pasta Grannies, and selected a video (topic) to be focused on. After several days on exploring, I finally ended up with the baking recipe - How to make a classic tiramisù dessert from Treviso, published by Pasta Grannies.

I did some exploration and breakdown towards the baking recipe. The full progression was documented under the PDF below :

Fig 1.1 Breakdown (week 4 / 05.02.2023)

Following the breakdown, I continued working on AI. At the very first, I "build" all the ingredients that granny had indicated in the video. Below are the full progression of the "ingredients" creation :
#ingredients needed - Espresso, 6 eggs, mascarpone, molinari, salt, ladyfinger, cocoa powder, sugar

Fig 1.2 Full Ingredients, created using AI (week 6 / 19.02.2023)

After having the ingredients, I continued my adventures to the "process". I breakdown the process into 13 steps to complete the Treviso's tiramisu :
//I do included some frames that might be useful while designed the minimal animated infographic//

Fig 1.3 Steps, created using AI (week 7 / 21.02.2023)

Furthermore, after having the full "weapon", I started to design the layout composition :

Fig 1.4 Layout composition (week 7 / 21.02.2023)

In order to make the poster to be more personalised to Mara (granny), I took the black cat that granny had, which continuous been mentioned/captured in the YouTube video as a reference to make the poster having a sense of Mara's. The rationale of the ideation is that I felt creating Granny's illustration into the poster is a bit difficult to match my design concept  and also boring? so I decided to insert the black cat into the poster. Also, it is not often to meet a person who rear a black cat :

Fig 1.6 Layout with Mara's personality (week 7 / 21.02.2023)

Fig 1.7 Draft Outcome (week 7 / 21.02.2023)

Feedback from Mr. Martin _ week 7 / 23.02.2023
Great Job, I think can submitted already. The ideation of having the black cat instead granny was great too, never thinking of it before you explained.

Feedback from Mr. Hafiz _ week 7 /23.02.2023
The cat idea is great. But, it would be better if adjusted the colour of the ingredients on the poster. The ingredients on the poster is very light and takes some effort to make out the words and images.

After receiving the feedback, despite the fact that I thought I was accomplished with the poster, I periodically need to amend onto it. Overall, I made multiple attempts to modify the colours of the components to make them darker or more contrasted, but I thought that doing so had caused my whole outcome or conceptualization to diverge into different design concepts. In the end, I decided that changing the background colour was more appropriate for my case because I didn't want to abandon my design's colour scheme but yet having the intention to make the ingredients to be more contrasted :

Fig 1.8 Colour adjustment (week 8 / 03.03.2023)

Fig 1.9 Before and after Colour adjustment (week 8 / 03.03.2023)

During the process, I felt that the font was not so much suitable / connected with an Italian design direction. The initial used font was a bit more in deco art and what I first think about Italian font was the calligraphy font, so I did some research on it. I felt the font (Autography) was more Italian-style and readable. Although the fact was, this font was not much suitable for the body text, so I chose a font (Bakso Sapi) that is a "handwritten" font that also matched my design concept :

Fig 1.10 Font amendment (week 8 / 04.03.2023)

After the amendment of the font direction, I felt that the word "Tiramisu" that I intended to place on the top of the tiramisu is a bit out of place with the overall design, so I made an amendment by creating a "chocolate deco" for the graphic :

Fig 1.11 Tiramisu Deco font (week 8 / 04.03.2023)

While designing the "chocolate deco", I figured that the margin of both left and right was not balance, and I did a quick amend on it to fulfil the ideation of "balancing".

After several modifications and attempts, the final outcome was released :

Information Design - Project 1 @ Minimal Animated Infographic

INSTRUCTION
You will develop an infographic to communicate a concept, topic or idea. The infographic should take viewer visually through information you want them to learn or know. Based on your infographic the audience should be able to learn through viewing and interpreting the various graphical information and text.  You will be required to evaluate what parts of the topic, concept, or idea are most important to tell/demonstrate and ask how you would represent each piece of information best.  You will also decide how to graphically represent the most salient facts about your topic, concept or idea for student learning. This includes the finishing outcome which could be a slick animation or even a rough stop motion.

Use the assets from Project 1 Instructable Infographic poster into a 60 secs motion graphic. Once again, capture the aesthetics and narrative of the poster with movements, SFX and music. Max 60 seconds infographic video 720p: 1280x720 pixels (H26/mp4) published on YouTube (set to Unlisted).

EXPLORATION
After finalising the instructable poster draft, I began work on layering the frames in AI. Below is the PDF compilation for all the layering development in the video :
// This process took a long time since I need to reconstructed and rethinking about the amendment for the poster //

Fig 2.1 Full development of layering in AI, PDF
(week 8 / 03.03.2023)

After having the parts of layering outcome, I  continued the development of animating it in AE. // Usually I do it frame by frame (do one frame, then just layer the next frame), so I only think about how the next frame will go after the completion of a frame. //

To make the animation to be more smooth with BGM, I chose Cooking Show Music | Food Commercials Background Music by MUSIC4VIDEO as the infographic video's background music.

Fig 2.2 Development in AE
(week 8 / 03.03.2023)

In the meantime, during the development of AE, and since I had the intention of changing to a more "Italian" font, I made an amendment on this. I usually choose a font that matches both the poster and video since I wish to achieve consistency between the two.

Fig 2.3 Font amendment,
comparison before and after
(week 8 / 04.03.2023)

Continued after the font amendment, I felt that the video does not have Granny’s personality; it is a bit boring and not interesting. So, I came to an intention, having my creation of "Granny’s personality"—the black cat to be in the scene for the full video :

Fig 2.4 Granny's Personality,
comparison before and after
(week 8 / 04.03.2023)

Then, I finalised a draft version of the animated video in AE :

Fig 2.5 Animated Video Draft, AE
(week 8 / 04.03.2023)

After finalised a version of animated video, I felt that there are some minor issue that might need to amend for a better outcome. For example, since the poster had changed the border colour, I might need to amend it for a more consistent outcome. So, I did some experiment on the different style of border including full border, text border, graphic border as well as no border. But, at the end, I felt that the "no border" is more flexible for the video especially there is a sunset scene appeared at the "arrangement & finishing" :

Fig 2.6 Border experiments
(week 8 / 04.03.2023)

Moreover, I did figured that there are some typographical error in the video such as the line spacing was too stress, margin and etc. I did a quick amendment on it and produced a final version of animated video in AE :

before and after
(week 8 / 04.03.2023)

Fig 2.8 Final AE Animation
(week 8 / 04.03.2023)

After finalising all the animated frames in AE, I decided to import the video out to PR for a better editing experience for sound effects, as AE from my side will be a bit laggy when I replaying the music for clarification.

The sound effects used :

After several attempts on trying the best sound effects and adjusting the audio preset, it finally came to an end, the final outcome of minimal animated infographics had released :

REFLECTION

Throughout the overall experience in Project 1, information design, it can be described as tense and exciting because my AI crashed when I was almost finished illustrating all the ingredients. This is not a lesson, because I was already afraid of disappearing and uploaded to Adobe Cloud, but it was not automatically uploaded; is this retribution?  I believe my computer is irate because I never give him a break. Aside from the reconstruction and depression here, I really enjoyed myself, and the outcome was not at all expected. Although the result wasn't 100% perfect, I expected to struggle or come up with a style that I didn't enjoy before I started this task because it felt so challenging to finish it in accordance with the brief. I truly appreciate the entire process, from illustration to video editing, because it is the outcome considered as my transformation from zero to final.

After completing this project, I discovered that I had actually been taking the degree for a year; comparatively speaking, I feel more secure in the composition and principles as well as being perfectionism.  Although it appears that there are only minor issues such as margin and word spacing, I would like to re-export and re-construct for the best results. What I believe is that, even if it is simply an assignment, I must be accountable for each of my works. 🥱✌🏻
