LECTURES

#WEEK 1
Information Design Lecture #1 : Information Briefing
During this particular week, we are focusing on the module briefing session. We are given an idea on what is expected for the module outcome as well as the assignments.

#The important notes :
➜  prepare the materials for the next class @ Exercise 1 : Quantify & Visualise Data.

Information Design Practical #1 : Motion Graphics

#The important notes :
1. What is motion graphics?
Motion Graphics means Graphics in Movement / composition + animations

2. Animation vs. Motion Graphics
Animation
➜  images that create illusion of movement.
➜  animation consists of 4 types including : 2D animation, 3D animation, stop motion. and motion graphics

Motion Graphics
➜  Consists of  text animation such as Kinetic Typography and vector animation as graphic elements that created in AI.

#Week 1 Task
In addition, we are given tasks during this particular week :
Task 1 : Recommend 3 professional motion graphics with rationals & inspirations.

The first recommended motion graphics were the 2D motion graphics produced by Swell.tv. The motion graphics video was about a brief history of coffee. I used to choose this as one of the recommendations as it is a simple and brief motion graphic that tells us a story. Overall, the smooth transitions and animations were connected within VoiceOver. Even without the VoiceOver, the smooth transition, color, texture, and art direction may entice the audience. The inspiration that I got from this video was to create smooth transition motion graphics, as smooth transitions will really bring out a sense of comfort to the audience while still attracting them to know more about the information.

Second, this motion graphics video was named "Apple Motion Graphics," which was created by SOGA Motion. It was a motion graphics video that used typography (text) and simple shapes such as circles and lines. It was thought to be a combination of many "simple things," but the main focus was on what was done with the simplicity. Although the motion graphics were only using simple elements, I, as an audience member, could feel the ideation and stories that the designer wanted to inspire. The abstract painting inspired this motion graphics; using different colours to contrast a particular scene was interesting, such as when the small circles slid down and fell into the dark water. Also, I discovered that the creative design component of the process for producing a successful motion graphics outcome was far more significant than the animation, which was developed from the idea, storyboard to the conversion of an idea into graphics.

The last recommended motion graphic chosen was about dealing with anxiety and depression by Minddistrict English. This type of art direction that creates within line and shape really inspired me. The unique aspect of this motion graphic was not having only the lines but also the flurry texture that might represent the sense of trembling when people get anxious or depressed. Also, rather than using a graphics illustration character, this motion graphics used a circle shape to present the character, which helped to balance the colour code within the overall art direction.

Task 2 : Share personal burnout experience.
Task 3 : Research on Art Direction for Kinetic Typography and mental health (group).

#WEEK 2
Information Design Practical #2 : Motion Graphics - Practical 1
During this particular week, we are focusing on the module briefing session. We are given an idea on what is expected for the module outcome as well as the assignments.

#The important notes :
What is Kinetic Typography?
➜ Motion Graphics in word by word.
➜ Animated paragraph / excerpts with Final composition.
➜ Good text animation

What is Kinetic Typography ?
1. Drag the music into AE
2. Create a new composition > change size to 1920 x 1080 px

Fig 2.1 create a new composition (week 2 / 19.01.2023)

3. Control (hold) + click > Trim comp to work area

Fig 2.2 Trim comp to work area (week 2 / 19.01.2023)

4. Layer > New > Solid [apply a solid coloured layer]
5. Layer > New > Text [apply text layer]
6. Trimming - Left bracket key to cut the clips

Fig 2.3 Trimming (week 2 / 19.01.2023)

7. create a null object [Layer > New > Null Object], renamed as animation, parent and link to the layer.
8. Animated!

#WEEK 3
Information Design Practical #3 : Motion Graphic Chart

#The important notes :
Motion Graphic Animation Chart
➜  a chart that is a graphical representation for data visualisation.
➜  To animate chart > using AE to trim paths.

Types of Motion Graphic Animation Chart

Fig 3.1 Types of Motion Graphic Animation Chart (week 3 / 26.01.2023)

➜  Pie Chart
➜  Bar Chart
➜  Line Graph

//During this session, we are instructed to self-learning based on the Youtube tutorial given. we may focus on the assigned type of animation chart. My assigned task is the Bar Chart//

Step to Create a Bar Chart
1. Create new composition > 1920x1080
2. Create a solid layer [layer > new > solid]
3. Use pen tool to draw the line, make sure the [fill options] is "non-fill" and pull the stroke to the right to increase the stroke weight.
4. Under the Shape Layer, click [add > trim path > Adjust the end point] to animate the bar chart.
5. Highlight both of the [end point], right click [keyframe assistant > Easy Ease] to repeat the animation.
6. Add motion blur.

Fig 3.3 Final Outcome, Bar Chart Practical (week 3 / 26.01.2023)

//Although we only instructed to focus on the assigned part, I eager to try out on the other types of animation chart (without following the data, just a practical for self)//

Step to Create a Line Graph
1. Create new composition > 1920x1080
2. Create a solid layer [layer > new > solid]
3. Use pen tool to draw the line, make sure the [fill options] is "non-fill"
4. Under the Shape Layer, click [add > trim path > Adjust the end point] to animate the line graph.
5. Highlight both of the [end point], right click [keyframe assistant > Easy Ease] to repeat the animation.
6. Add motion blur.

Step to Create a Donut / Pie Chart
1. Create new composition > 1920x1080
2. Create a solid layer [layer > new > solid]
3. Use ellipse tool to draw a circle by holding [shift]
4. (Pie Chart) Increase the stroke weight until it fully fill in the circle.
(Donut Chart) Increase the stroke weight (a bit)
5. Under the Shape Layer, click [add > trim path > Adjust the end point] to animate the Pie / Donut Chart
6. Add motion blur.

#WEEK 4
Information Design Practical #4 : Vector / Character animation

#The important notes :
Vector / Character animation
➜  Create graphics in AI, selected layers that intend to animate, and place them on separate layers.

How to animate vector
1. AI, Create new artboard resolution : 1920x1080
2. Separate subjects in different layers
3. Import to after effects (AE), import as composition and the layers will be separated for animation

REFLECTION

During the full lecture and practicals, I studied many features and effects in After Effects (AE), which is the major emphasis of this module. Prior learning about AE, I felt that animation was straightforward; but, after conducting my own study, I discovered that there are several stages, nights, and plays necessary to reach a desired output. It may be described as highly technical task in which, without knowing how to operate after effects, it appeared to be a problem for all future assignments. Although these practicals could not turn me into an AE professional, they did provide me with some fundamental information to study in the future. Overall, the software was pretty intriguing and more effective than working frame-by-frame in AI and exporting in PS as AE seems to be more skilled in animating characters and vectors.
