MODULE INFORMATION

INSTRUCTION
This task aims to explore the production shooting and editing environment. Project 2 consists of 4x Editing exercises (individual) ; 1x Shooting exercise (individual), ; 1x shooting and editing exercises (shooting in group, editing in individual)

EXPLORATION

Project 2 : Shooting Exercises (individual)

#Week2 Shooting Exercise
Shoot different angle in landscape format for 5 sec/ shot and compile them through Adobe Premiere Pro (mention the shot size)

Since I had absent during the particular week, I invited my friend to be my 'model' in order to complete the shooting exercise. The venue that we shot is at Common Ground, Taylor's lakeside.

FEEDBACK @ Shooting Exercise
Wide Shot is considered as the full body shot. But, you does not need to reshot it since this was only an exercise.

3. Dip to Black [Project Panel > effects > video transitions > dip to black ]
4. Cross Dissolve [Project Panel > effects > video transitions > cross dissolve]
5. Split [command+K]

At the very first, download the footage, combine all the clips together and export it.

During the Week 7, we had instructed on doing the colour grading on the editing practise (Lalin).

Fig 2.6 colour Grading, full tab (week 10/ 31.10.2022)

I make some adjustment on the basic correction for the overall clips to more contrast and darken in which I felt that the original clip was too light.

Fig 2.7 Basic colour correction (week 10/ 31.10.2022)

And, for the mirror clip, I created some black shadows at the back to darken the environment light.

Then, finally released the draft version of Lalin ;

After the tutorial practise of colour grading, I re-attempt on the colour grading. As the previous attempt I did it on the basis of graphical texts (which my original file had been missed and yet cannot edit in different line). I did a re-attempt on the 30s + graphics text to separate the text and the video in different line :

After the re-attempt, I developed into the colour grading ;

Project 2 : Shooting and Editing Exercises (Shoot in Group, Edit individual)

#30 seconds MV

Week 1: We were instructed to form a group for 3 and luckily I did it. For this particular task, I completed with 2 course-mates, Jun Zhe and Christie.

Week 2: We started to explore the possible MV for references, discuss the shooting locations, timing, etc.

Week 3: We gathered together after class and shoot the full body shot at campus. And, for the personal individual part, we decided to shot separately to form a sense of varieties between our three productions.

Fig 3.1 MV clips shooting (week 3/ 14.09.2022)

Based on our video clips, I picked the most potential clips and shots, drag and construct the best composition and subsequences.

The Draft outcome :

FEEDBACK @ MV shoot Draft outcome
Overall great, missing on the extreme close-up shot. Add some colour correction on the video outcome.

After receiving the feedbacks, I continued my adventures on developing this assignment. Yet, to be mentioned, I took quite a long time on reshooting some clips since my full time schedule. But, luckily I did a new one for the submission.

Since I was not so satisfied with the previous one, I re-developed the full clips; drag and drop the potential/ wanted clips :

Fig 3.4 Re-Development (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

Then, continued by combine and decide on the best composition :

Fig 3.5 Development, composition (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

Fig 3.6 Outcome, composition clip;
 without colour grading and text (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

After having the final composition, I proceed my progress to the colour grading and add the caption text :

Fig 3.7 Basic correction, comparison view (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

In order to make the 3x single shot combination to be more interesting. I adjusted the colour schema of the both side (Jun Zhe's and Christie's part) to be more darken so that the middle part (mine) were be more contrasted.

Fig 3.8 Before adjustment (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

Since the background was slightly light and not so "cool", I had the intention to darken all the colour schema.

Fig 3.8 After adjustment (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

Fig 3.9 After adjustment layer (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

After the colour correction, I continued on adding the text caption; "Left and Right", "Charlie Puth feat. Jung Kook of BTS". I did a research on the music poster font, Mentimum font and I get the downloadable font from Fontlot.com

Fig 3.10 Research on music font, Mentimum (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

Fig 3.11 Apply the font (week 15/ 06.12.2022)

After the text caption, I finalised some minor adjustment and finally released the final outcome.

Project 2 : Shooting and Editing Exercises (Shoot in Group, Edit individual)

#Production Shoot
In this particular task, our tutorial group had been separated into 2 teams for the production shooting.

Before the production shoot (Pre-production) :
During the class in week 4, we had given the opportunity to discuss regarding on the shooting location, script, crew list and etc.

Our team decided on using 2 actors for the shoot instead of 1 actor and 1 actress, in facts we want to create sometime more comedy and unique. As instructed, we used the class hours to did the location surveying on check which location was suitable for our scene.

Fig 4.1 Location Checking (week 4/ 19.09.2022)

Fig 4.2 Shooting List + Timeline (week 6/ 03.10.2022)

During the production shoot :
During the production shoot, I was in charge on lightning crew (gaffer) with Ming En. To be mention, our team had managed a good time management in which we finished the production shooting within the expected 4 hours time limitation!

Fig 4.3 The Production Team (week 6/ 03.10.2022)

After the production shoot (Post-production) :
For the post-production, we had instructed to edit the production shoot individually.
At the very first, as usual, drag all the clips and audio to Adobe Premiere Pro.

Fig 4.4 Video clips (week 8/ 20.10.2022)

Then, sync all the audio (as the audio of original clips is very low and unclear);
[Drag video+ audio clip > align > highlight all > synchronise]

Fig 4.5 Sync the audio (week 8/ 20.10.2022)

After sync all the audio, i start to edit the video to a great sequence. In order to make the effect to be cinematic, I searched a BGM that having a "cinematic feeling" for trailer as a reference to edit the clips.

Outcome with original audio clip (satisfy sequence) :

Fig 4.6 Outcome with original audio clip (week 8/ 20.10.2022)

Then, I did added some effects (audio effects / audio transition / video transition: dip to black) in order to make the clips smoother. Additionally, the sound essential effects are been used too. To create a sense of cinematic again, I randomly insert some audio clips at A3.

Outcome with BGM + adjustment :

Fig 4.8 Outcome with BGM + adjustment (week 8/ 21.10.2022)

After the audio and clips adjustment, I make some adjustment on the colour and caption editing.

Outcome draft :

FEEDBACK #Production Shoot Draft outcome
Overall great. What minor adjustment can do is 0.16 seconds of the scene, you can make the background darker.

REFLECTION

Throughout Project 2 in this module, I experienced lots of happiness as well as anxiety. Although video editing based on tutorials might be slightly "brainless" compared to other design modules, it still requires lots of time to get a good composition and final outcome. Using different BGMs, sound effects, or even font types can influence the outcome of a video, whether it's a soft and calm theme or a horror and irradiate theme. The most difficult and stressful aspect of the project was the time commitment; in fact, it took a long time from pre-production to post-production. Meanwhile, there was happiness inside! The most enjoyable project was the production shoot, which gave me my first taste of "real production." The experience throughout the production shoot was quite interesting, and the outcome was beyond my expectations too!
