Project 1 : Audio Editing Exercise Part I - Audio (Sound For Visual)
choose or record sound clips to be used to create sound effect to bring a video clip to live. The clips will be provided. We are required to identify the visual components from the video clip that needs sound.
Duration : 2minutes
Requirements for Audio Dubbing
1. Editing in Premiere Pro
2. Place Dialogue on Audio track 1; Hard Sound Effects on Audio track 2-3 ; Ambient Sound: Audio track 4-6.
4. Edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal [Premiere Pro > Audio Effects > Pitch Shifter > Semi tones]
EXPLORATION
At the very first, I doing some listening on the senior's audio editing (the samples given) before I start the recording. But, I am curious on how the initial audio goes, the scripts looks so not linked on the audio. So, I did some research on reviewing the original full movie and yet discovered that the movie was about the soul of Joe had gone to the body of cat, so the original audio of "Joe" was the sound of the cat (the cat), and the audio of "cat" was Joe. But, as the requirements and scripts goes, the effects of the clips changed.
Before the voice-over, I did some some research regarding audio dubbing and audio shaping.
#Audio dubbing
The process of adding new dialogue or other sounds to the sound track of a motion picture that has already been shot. Dubbing is most familiar to audiences as a means of translating foreign-language films into the audience's language.
#Audio Shaping
Noise shaping is the combination of dithering and equalization, used to both cover quantization noise, and push any noise created by dithering into less perceivable areas of the frequency spectrum. With the use of noise shaping, dithering can be applied, while theoretically reducing the overall perceivable noise floor.
I started on recording my VoiceOver by using phone, insert the clips to Premiere Pro.
Fig 1.1 Voiceover (week 4/ 23.09.2022)
Fig 1.2 Outcome with original VoiceOver (week 4/ 23.09.2022)
After having the outcome on the VoiceOver, I tried on adding the sound effects and background music.
#Sound effects that added:
- Wind leaves rustling
- Street ambience with walking people
- Happy child laughing (ahaha), (heh heh)
- Inhale, Exhale
- Car engine sound, car pass-by ambience
- Leaves dropping, rolling..
#BGM: Jazz cartoon - Paris Jazz Club BA (0:2:23 - 0:50:17)
* the reason for adding the BGM is because Soul's original video has a jazzy feel and in facts the filming / scene location is outside the musical theatre (maybe).
After adding the sound effect(s), I even tried to shape the audio by using pitch shifter. As for some words, it is quite hard for me to dubbed the conservation especially for the cat voices. So, I used the effect of "Bass" and "Pitch Shifter" to adjust and maintain a balance within the audio.
Fig 1.5 Adjustment on pitch shifter (week 5/ 02.10.2022)
After tweaking and adding sound effects, background music, etc., the final result #1 was created.
Outcome draft 1 :
Fig 1.6 Outcome Draft #1 (week 5/ 02.10.2022)
Then I tried re-listen to my outcome on the next week, I felt that the cat audio in front and back seems like unbalanced, so I re-attempt it and yet figured out that the "bypass" option was turned on, so that's the reason making the sound became unbalanced.
Also, I felt that the sound was messy and terrible, especially the sound for the people on chatting. The sound should be came from far, and small instead.
Then, I shifted to adjust the essential sound [essential sound > pick the audio type > adjust]
#for the girl laughing; preset on ambience
#the ppl chatting ; ambience > stereo width , reduce loudness
#BGM; music > preset to balanced bgm
#Exhale, inhale; SFX > reduce volume
#Dialogue; balanced the preset, reduce loudness
etc..

Continued by re-listen and minor adjustments on the audio, the final outcome that I satisfy been released.

FEEDBACK #Audio Dubbing Draft #2
- Remove the background music, this particular exercise does not need any BGM, focusing on the audio and ambiences.
- You might add on more full ambience track towards the clips such as light traffic, busy New York street ambience, leaves ambience.
- For the audio at the last seems having a big echo, should make some adjustments on it.
After receiving the feedback, I did some amendments on it and yet search for more sound ambience for the clips.
Add on ; Light traffic, street ambience

Project 1 : Audio Editing Exercise Part II - Audio (Sound Shaping)
INSTRUCTION
We are given a choice of scenarios and we are required to pick one and create the soundscape for the chosen scenario.
EXPLORATION
Based on the Pre-recorded lecture given, the important notes :
#Frequency Range
- Frequency range was represent in Hertz (Hz), and as a human we can hear between 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
#Dynamic Range
- Dynamic range was represent in decibels (dB). The threshold of human hearing is measured as 0dB SPL (sound pressure level) and the threshold of pain 130dB SPL.
//the max of dynamic range is 130dB SPL//
#Space; Mono Vs. Stereo
- Mono sounds are recorded using single audio channel, while stereo sounds are recorded using two audio channels.
//mono audio files only contain a single audio channel//
After the lecture given, we proceed to the tutorial session. During the tutorial session, we are guided on how to shape the audio in phone call, muffled and reverb sound effects. Below fig 2.4 - 2.7 were the development and outcomes for the tutorial :
#Phone call sound effects;
//bring down BASS, TREBLE and raise MID range between 500 Hz to 2kHz to achieve the effect.//
Fig 2.5 Phone call _ sample audio attempt (Week 14/ 03.12.2022)
#Muffled sound effects;
Muffle sound effects means, the sound from the source that is not directly delivered to the listener. Muffle sound usually by wrapping it with something. For example to speak with a scarf over your mouth.
//bring up BASS, TREBLE to the bottom, raise MID Range to top//
Fig 2.6 Muffled _ sample audio attempt (Week 14/ 03.12.2022)
#Reverb sound effects;
Sound in SPACE; echo caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface
//Apply REVERB//
Fig 2.7 Reverb _ sample audio attempt (Week 14/ 03.12.2022)
Continued after the tutorial, we was instructed to shape the sounds below as our final outcome for this "Sound Shaping Exercise Submission". As there are differ requirements on the slides and recorded lecture, I picked the max option and we are required to shape the audio track to :
1. voice of phone call
2. voice coming from inside of closet
3. voice of big stadium
4. voice of toilet/ bathroom
5. voice of underground cave
//the development and final outcome are showed below.//

#Project 1 : Audio Editing Exercise Part III - Audio (Creating Sound Effects)
INSTRUCTION
Record using a portable recorder or handphones, combine and apply necessary audio processing tools, to create a believable sound. Target sound are given to create.
EXPLORATION
By having the YouTube tutorial provided, I gained some knowledge about the how's sound design goes. Based on the lecture & tutorial given, #the Important notes:
There are 4 important sound design techniques :
1. Time stretching/ compression
- time stretching and compression changes the length of audio without altering its pitch.
2. Pitch Shifting
- Process of adjusting the pitch of an audio signal upwards pr downwards, for both corrective (getting a vocal perfectly in tune, for example) and purely creative (Changing the character of a drum loop, say) purposes.
Effects > Time and Pitch > Stretch and Pitch; Play around the Stretch and Pitch Shift.
//Stretching >100% = slow down the audio, compressed <100% = faster the audio//
3. Reserving
- The end of the audio will be heard first and the beginning last. Reserve audio changes the whole feeling and rhythm of the sound.
Effects > Reverse
4. Layering
- Arranging several separate sounds together, in such a way the overall effect is of a single complete sound.
//it's like the audio with different skill set (such as pitch shifting, reserving or compression) which layered together to achieve the outcome together//
For the layering, it required on the multitrack.
It is necessary to do the "fade in/ fade out" effects for all the clips so it will smoothly go into your clips without any disruptions.
Fig 3.3 Attempt, Layering (Week 14/ 03.12.2022)
Continued after the tutorial, we was instructed to design the sounds below as our final outcome for this "Sound Design Exercise Submission". The required version :
1. Magnification Explosion sound
2. Variation of Punch Sounds (Triple Punches)
3. Monster of Alien voice (one part of the sample voice) *for this version was required to explore the feature "modulation".
//the development and final outcome are showed below.//
# Magnification Explosion Sound
Since during the tutorial practise I do proceed on my version for the explosion, so I took the version as the basis and adding some effects towards different clips.

FEEDBACK
#Audio Dubbing Draft #2
- Remove the background music, this particular exercise does not need any BGM, focusing on the audio and ambiences.
- You might add on more full ambience track towards the clips such as light traffic, busy New York street ambience, leaves ambience.
- For the audio at the last seems having a big echo, should make some adjustments on it.
REFLECTION
Overall, this exercise looks easy, but it's not. It takes a lot of time and focus to listen to and find those small subtleties. It appears that some noises cannot be heard correctly without a decent set of headphones, or that recording or editing in a loud area has an indirect effect on the overall impression of the video to the viewer. During this task, I had faced on several challenges in which the most significant of which was time and the location, because this exercise requires that I be silent, perseverant, and persistent. Last, it can be stated that the findings that I found during this task was once you put on the headphones, you are about to listen to the same clips over and over again till you felt asleep. But, overall the outcome was interesting! :D
