WEEK 4 @ 18.04.2022 - 24.04.2022
COMPOSITION 1 : VISUAL SHOTS, COMPOSITIONS & LIGHT / SHADOWS

PRATICAL

This week's focus was on Chiaroscuro, in which the light and dark, shadows and compositions. I combined my progress during the practical in Pdf:

LECTURE WEEK 4 @ VISUAL TYPES AND SHOTS

COMPOSITION 1 - INTRO

How to arrange the elements in your visual effectively?
To arrange them in a way that brings out meaning.

Figure 1.4 Basic composition visual rules  (week 4/ 22.04.2022)

  • Visual narrative (must complements, think of the look and feel of scene; getting emotions)
  • Visual flow (clear flow that direct viewer's eyes)
  • Visual balance (balance composition - symmetrical/ asymmetrical)
  • Visual hierarchy (the way you visualise and focus subject matter)

2. DIFFERENT TYPES OF SHOT

Figure 1.5 Different types of shot (week 4/ 22.04.2022)
  • Establishing
Wide shots/ Long shot (the overall big shot). Wide shots were often used to establish not just the setting, but portray spectacle and give audiences the chance to take in all the splendour and grandeur of a location, while still giving them enough information to process what's going on.
  • Bird's eyeview
Capture from up to down and also known as overhead shots. It's somewhere around a 90-degree angle above the scene taking place.
  • Frame within a frame
A well-composed frame within a frame that can fracture screen space, add depth, and create visual interest in your cinematic compositions. (having foreground and background)
  • Medium shot
The shot also called a three-quarters shot - which, obviously, frames three-quarters of the character. This is one of the standard camera angles used to frame a character. The shot between close-up and long shot.
  • Close up
The close-up is an intimate moment, a look into a character's mind. It cause us to "catch" emotions, so as the rest of the scene plays out. The shot that emphasises emotions.
  • Worm's eye view
This is one of the close-up shot that intimate moment, look into character mind but is the shot that captured from lying down to up.

TUTORIALS @ LECTURE REPORT 3

INSTRUCTIONS :
Using your phone camera, take pictures that depict the six different types of composition explained in this lecture. Upload these picture into your blog.

Take the bear as the main character for the following 4 shots (establishing, bird eye's view, medium shot and close up) :
  • Establishing
Figure 1.6 Establishing shot (week 4/ 24.04.2022)

The image above was captured in a wide shot which depicting the bear, the main character among the foods and the setting. Based on the image, audiences may deduce that the character is enjoying a picnic outside, possibly in a field.
  • Bird's eyeview
Figure 1.7 Bird's eye view (week 4/ 24.04.2022)

The image above was captured in a position of 90-degree which showing the top position of the character and objects.
  • Medium shot
Figure 1.8 Medium shot (week 4/ 24.04.2022)

This shot was taken by focusing on the and the character without any settings. The medium shot draws the audience's attention to the object (foods) in the photograph.
  • Close up
Figure 1.9 close up (week 4/ 24.04.2022)

This photo was obtained using the "zoom in" technique, which contrasted the character's movement and feelings. The close-up picture in this photograph may depict a character who is depressed and longs for someone to hug him.
  • Frame within a frame
Figure 1.10 frame within a frame (week 4/ 24.04.2022)

This photograph displayed an image of a frame within a frame. The character in the foreground is taking a selfie in front of a mirror, whereas the people at the beach are in the background.
  • Worm's eye view

The image above was taken from a lower angle using a tripod. This photo caught the human and sky perspectives from a lower point of view.

WEEK 5 @ 24.04.2022 - 01.05.2022
FOREGROUND, MIDDLE-GROUND & BACKGROUND

PRATICAL

This week, Mr. Hafiz continued the class on Chiaroscuro, but this week is more confused on shadows :

Figure 2.1 Practical class week 5 (week 5/ 26.04.2022)

LECTURE WEEK 5 @ FORE, MID AND BACKGROUND

1. COMPOSITION 3 - INTRO

Composition essentially refers to how your image is put together.

When compositing a scene, creating an effective sense of the space is very important. Illustrating 3 elements below within your image will communicate a sense of scale to the viewers :

Figure 2.3 elements of composition (week 5/ 26.04.2022)
  • foreground (close to the viewer)
  • middle-ground
  • background (far away)
You can arrange the subject matter to be at the foreground or arrange the focus to be in the middle-ground and even the furthest view of the visual in the background.

For example, the foreground :

Figure 2.4 Adventure Time (Cartoon Network, 2010)

The figure above (figure 2.4) is using size differences and colour contrast to highlight foreground as main focus, which is the main character of the adventure time.

For example, the middle-ground :

Figure 2.5 Adventure Time (Cartoon Network, 2010)

Figure 2.4 is using the size differences and light/shadow contrast to highlight the main focus.

For example, the furthest view of the background :

Figure 2.6 Adventure Time (Cartoon Network, 2010)

Figure 2.5 above is using shapes and light/shadow contrast to highlight the main focus.

2. COMPOSITION 3 - DESIGN FLOW

Good arrangement of  visual focus using foreground, middle-ground and background should also indicate a sense of movement, and rhythm in the design, which known as design flow. Design flow is the way that your eye moves or is led around a composition.

A good flow will:
  • lead the viewer's eye throughout the layout, moving from element to element with ease.
  • influence the way the viewer will digest your content.

TUTORIALS @ LECTURE REPORT 4

INSTRUCTIONS :
From any video, screen capture scenes that portray foreground, middle-ground and background in the story. Outline areas in the scenes for each grounds and upload the pictures into your blog. Explain what design principles applied for each visual and how it affect the narratives.

The animation movie that I chosen is 'Home (2015)' :
  • Foreground
Figure 2.7 Home (2015) (week 5/ 03.04.2022)

The scenario (figure 2.6) contrasts the primary character, tip, and Oh (the boov) by juxtaposing different aspects such as the lighting. Despite the fact that the scene portrays a sense of gloom, there are lighting highlights on the main focus. Meanwhile, the sense of contrast  on the opposite in this scene : bright vs dark (the main focus and the background) will attract the viewer's attraction.
  • Middle ground
Figure 2.8 Home (2015) (week 5 / 30.04.2022)

The scene above (figure 2.7) uses shape variances and colour contrast to highlight the middle ground as the major focus, which is the main character sticking at the ceiling. The colour used for the main emphasis and the backdrop creates a feeling of contrast, since the backdrop is predominantly in green code.
  • Background
Figure 2.9 Home (2015) (week 5 / 30.04.2022)

The scene above (figure 2.8) uses size differences and light/shadow contrast to highlight the main focus. It can be interpreted as a background since the Boov, Oh is arranged in the foreground in a large size, indicating that the story had shifted the attention to the figure in the background.

WEEK 6 @ 02.05.2022 - 08.05.2022
PERSPECTIVE

PRATICAL

Figure 3.1 Practical class week 6 (week 6/ 06.05.2022)

LECTURE WEEK 6 @ PERSPECTIVE

1. PERSPECTIVE
The art of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth and position in relation to each other.

2. THE CONSTRUCT PERSPECTIVE

Figure 3.2 construct perspectives (week 6/ 06.05.2022)

  • One-point perspective
Figure 3.3 one-point perspective (week 6/ 06.05.2022)

The most simple method of producing three-dimensional images entails drawing your objects emerging from a single point on the horizon. As images get closer to the vanishing point the smaller they become.

  • Two-point perspective
Figure 3.4 two-point perspective (week 6/ 06.05.2022)

The vanishing points either side of the horizon, and the objects and building within the scene are drawn to both of these vanishing points.
  • Three-point perspective
Figure 3.5 three-point perspective (week 6/ 06.05.2022)

Consist of two vanishing points on opposite sides of a horizon (as in two-point perspective), but with the addition of another vanishing point high above or below the horizon. It given a boarder angle, which let the viewers to view by "looking down".
  • Isometric view
Figure 3.6 Isometric view (week 6/ 06.05.2022)

For creating detailed concepts of individual buildings, it's more beneficial to use a simple isometric view, since it allows you to clearly present three sides of your design without distorting perspective or obscuring details.

3. DYNAMIC APPLICATION
Mix and match different perspective methods to make any illustration or scene not to be rigid or boring.

TUTORIALS @ LECTURE REPORT 5

INSTRUCTIONS :

Find visuals from any comic, graphic novel, any visual media that express stories that captures the three different types of perspectives – one-point, two-points, three-points listed in today’s lecture. Draw lines to trace on the perspective directions and note on the vanishing point.

The following moments were captured in the movie "Cinderella" (2015).

TASK 2 :

MODULE INFORMATION

TASK 2 INFORMATION

Task 2 :

INSTRUCTIONS
Think of a moment in time that changed a narrative for the better or a scene in a movie that turned the tide of the story, or a particular part of a video game that made you rejoice or cry along with the character, or a memorable chapter in your favourite book that made you return to read it again and again. These are decisive moments that impacted a story and you as an audience. Whether the moments are based on real life events or fictional narratives, human psychology is easily affected by moments like these. As a designer, you are to capture these moments and translate them into a single piece of animated artwork.

EXERCISE 1 @ FINAL POSTER
Create a final poster for the moment, in 900x720 pix (landscape or portrait)

IDEA AND EXPLORATION
At the very beginning of the assignment, we are tasked with selecting a memorable scene to illustrate or create. I did spend more time on finding the moment for the creation. During my exploration, I was attracted by a moment that was animated in the movie "The Lion King", which was portrayed by Timon and Simba:

Timon : Look kid, bad things happen, and you can't do anything about it. right?
Simba : Right.
Timon : WRONG!

And, the aim that I selected this scene is I felt the words, how sad that Simba experienced the "bad things," and Timon's words which indirectly advised that no matter how difficult things are, there is always a way to get through. Moreover, the scene is really adorable in which Timon gonna to "boop" Simba's nose. Below are the screen recording for the moment of the scene :

Figure 4.1 Screen recording on the selected moment (week 7/ 15.05.2022)
Click "hereto view the full clip ( 0:05 - 0:09 )

I take the scene in "The Lion King" as a reference to create my task in this assignment, starting my  journey to frame the poster and the final GIF animation.

Before the idea for the poster been explored, I chosen a frame to be create as my final poster. The poster (figure 4.1) was selected, as to present a sense that Timon is advising Simba, whereas Simba pay his fully attention, listening to Timon.

Figure 4.2 The selected frame (week 7/ 15.05.2022)

Then, I started the tracing journey by using the application, Adobe Illustrator (AI). And,  I combined my tracing process in the PDF below :

Figure 4.3 Tracing process - PDF (week 8/17.05.2022)

FINAL OUTCOME

Figure 4.4 final outcome of tracing (week 8/ 17.05.2022)

After the tracing process, I started to do idea sketch for the final poster.

Figure 4.5 idea sketch for poster (week 8/ 20.05.2022)

Then, I discover and explore the best composition for the poster in AI. Below are my experiment for the final poster, I had documented it in a PDF file as well and pls feel here to view it! :D

Figure 4.6 The experiment of the final poster (week 8/ 22.05.2022)

WEEK 9 / 24.05.2022
FEEDBACK
Your line tracing is on fire. Overall great, but may use the space on the moon background to place the movie title instead.

After the feedback given, I had tried to make changes on the poster. I created two compositions by deleting the shadow element on the moon background and place the movie title on it.

Figure 4.7 After adjustment (week 9/ 24.05.2022)

WEEK 9 / 24.05.2022
FEEDBACK
The composition of the second one (right in figure 4.7) is much better.

EXERCISE 2 @ FINAL ANIMATION
Create a final animation for the moment, in 900x720 pix (landscape or portrait)

IDEA AND EXPLORATION
Followed by the completion of the final poster, I start my journey in tracing the frames and frames. As usual, I documented the adventures of tracing journey into the PDF file below, feel free to view my effort :3

Figure 5.1 Full process on frame tracing, PDF (week 9/27.05.2022)

Figure 5.2 screenshot of the full frames, without reference (week 9/ 27.05.2022)

The total frame for the final animate consists of 30 frames. And, I tried to animate it by using the Adobe Photoshop (PS).

Figure 5.4 GIF animation #draft 1 (week 9/ 27.05.2022)

After the framing, I started to shape the background by using the same application, AI. To make the animation more realistic, I decided to use the same background colour as the scene moment.

To make the background to move together, I used the gradient tool to adjust the colours. Below was the proof on the adjustments :

Figure 5.5 gradient adjustments (week 9/ 28.05.2022)

FINAL OUTCOME FOR BACKGROUND

After the completion of background, I continued my adventures on creating the final animation.

Figure 5.8 The frames with background (week 9/ 28.05.2022)

Followed by the next steps, I move the files to PS for the animate creation. During the moment, I faced a difficulties in which my files was too big and the application could not supported it and cause me hours on stocking on a same page. But luckily, thanks Ms. Anis and Mr. Hafiz, I solved the difficulties.

To make the files smaller, select [image > image size > edit the image size]. By using the step given, the saving process goes so smooth and my outcome was finally be released :

WEEK 10 / 30.05.2022
FEEDBACK
Nice, but I hope you added the movie title and log-line in to the animation.

Then I started on the adventures in creating the movie title and log-line. Before I insert the log-line, I discover the best composition to show in order to perfrom it.

Figure 5.10 The composition for movie title (week 10/ 30.05.2022)

I used the same typefaces as my poster design, because I wished both of the design are connected within each other. On the left (figure 5.10), I used the same typefaces and colour whereas on the right, I used the eyedropper tools to find the most balanced colour with the background. To make the words to be more contrast, I picked the dark blue instead.

Continued by the process, I insert all the lines in frames to frames :

Figure 5.11 after adding the lines (week 10/ 30.05.2022)

After inserting the lines, I transferred the images to Photoshop for the GIF creation.

Figure 5.12 GIF, Development (week 10/ 30.05.2022)

And finally came to an end which my GIFs were completed!

Figure 5.13 outcome of final animation (week 10/ 30.05.2022)

But, at the moment, I figured that I had some typo in the lines, so I tried another attempts to create the animation. Below are my final outcome for the animation (Simba and Timon, memorable scene) :

WEEK 10 / 30.05.2022
FINAL ANIMATION (after log-line)
Much better.

REFLECTION

At the very first of the assignment, I felt quite confused and lost on the assignment. But, thankfully, Ms. Anis briefed me on the work again, and I was able to begin my exploration. The experiments in this job were quite intriguing and remarkable. The only regret I have is that I did not manage my time well when working on this assignment, as I am having heaps and piles of continual duties due to the ending of the semester. Thus, to avoid a repeat of the situation, I should plan better and more efficiently for my next new assignment.

Throughout the task, despite certain problems and challenges in tracing specific areas,  I was quite enjoying myself. I was undeniably fatigued during the process as I remained seated in my chair and repeated all of the motions for the entire 30 frames. However, when I saw the results, I was pleased. I felt that my abilities had really increased, and I had progressed in the area of learning design. Even if it is merely a routine chore, I truly believe that words and speech cannot adequately explain the feelings and satisfaction.
