TASK 1 @ EXERCISE
MODULE INSTRUCTION
INSTRUCTION
Choose TWO principles from Gestalt theory / Contrast / Emphasis / Balance / Repetition / Movement / Harmony / Unity / Symbol / Word and Image. Create 1 design for each chosen principle.
DESIGN ARTWORK #1
The idea is to create a design on using emphasis and Gestalt figure/ground principle.
Recap of the selected design principles
Emphasis
👉 Emphasis is used to create dominance and focus in a design work.
👉 Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer's attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas.
👉 Various elements can be used to create emphasis, such as colour, shapes or value, to achieve dominance.
Gestalt Figure/ ground
👉 The figure/ground principles states people instinctively perceive objects as either being in the foreground or the background. They either stand out prominently in the front (the figure) or recede into the back (the ground).
👉 It's a type of perceptual grouping which is necessary for recognising objects through vision.

VISUAL RESEARCH
After receiving the task, I having a couple of days on having "zero ideas" and finally came to a decision to create something in figure/ground. I did some research on Pinterest and some online sources to gain ideas and exploration to progress the task.

IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION
Figure 2 : close-up
By looking through the "inner" part of the tomato, I feel to have some illustrations inside. I saw something different like prawns or other animations in the illustrations, which representing the idea of figure/ground. I try to create something inside the "tomato".
Figure 3 : draft sketch 1
As 2022 is the year of tiger, I try some ideas on having a tiger illustration "inside" the tomato.
Figure 4 : draft sketch 2
But after having more ideas and exploration, I decide to turn the illustration to a "love image". As love is red, whereas tomato is red too.
Figure 5 : draft sketch 3
The ideas is family are always at our side, no matter what is happening.
After several weeks of studying, I felt compelled to develop my artwork. I'd want it to appear in the form of a bouquet. A bouquet, with a variety of tulips, including the "yellow" tulip. And this time, let the tulips flourish freely. I found an images from xiaohongshu as reference :
The outcome is having the main principles: contrast and repetition on it.
Figure 6 : draft outcome 1
To put the illustration more contrast and emphasis, I placed colours on it to look more contrast. And, I added on a "LOVE" captions to present the idea of love in it.
I showed the draft progress to Dr. Charles in the class and receiving some feedbacks :
FEEDBACK
Contrast is not as strong. The most contrast is the green. Green seems as the most strongest contrast compared to the red and orange. For the cutted part of the tomato, the orange side is almost bending with the background.
If you want the illustrations to look a bit more natural and tomato to more contrast, then the background should be more brighter. It may be orange as well, but may be a little bit more off white.
Figure 7 : draft outcome 2
I changed the background from orange to more brighter, a white background.
FEEDBACK
White is very strong. White still can maintain your concept, but preferring use cream as the background colour. And, the shadow is too big, you may make the shadow a bit smaller, and make it black or dark grey.
Figure 8 : draft outcome 3
I explained my ideas "inside" the tomato to Dr. Charles and he suggested to show in a zoom in version instead a portrait.
FEEDBACK
After the consultation given by Dr. Charles, I try to sketch up a "zoom up" version of the tomato to show a more interesting illustration.
After some thoughts and exploration regarding the tools in Procreate, I added on the frozen effect to show out a "frozen love" illustration, means the family love is always frozen in our heart. ♥️
FEEDBACK
Very strong dominant tomato against the background of the frozen heart. The tomato looks warm and emanating its flavour and freshness perhaps hopeful. Because the black space is significant. Unless you wanted it that way. That's all. Besides that its well done!
Figure 11 above is the final illustration idea for the design :
The final exploration is to create an illustration, "The Frozen Love" which showing family love is always be our side not matter what is happening, no matter is frozen or something bad (black). Friends may refused to help instead, but a warm home (love) is always ready for you.
FINAL OUTCOME AND SHORT RATIONALE
Figure 12 : Final outcome, PDF
Drawing the red tomato large and without any competing subjects in the background is representing an emphasis in the figure, emphasises the importance of the red tomato. Whereas, the cut tomato is having a figure/ground concept which the "love in the tomato" is the figure, while the tomato and the background is the ground.
DESIGN ARTWORK #2
The idea is to create a design on using contrast and repetition principle.
Recap of the selected design principles
Contrast
👉 The juxtaposition of strongly dissimilar elements (colours, shape, size, typo).
👉 Contrast can be work closely with the features of Emphasis, but in this time, contrast can be achieved by paying attention to opposites : light vs dark, rough vs smooth, large vs small.
👉 Visual experience would be monotonous if without the theory of contrast.👉 Contrast can provide visual interest, emphasise a point and express content. The greater the contrast. the more something will stand out and call attention.
Repetition
👉 Repetition often use repeated items or patterns in order to make an interesting design for many different effects.
👉 Repetition could make a work of designs seem active.
👉 The repetition of elements of design creates rhythm and pattern within the work.
👉 Variety is essential to keep rhythms exciting and active, and to avoid monotony.
👉 Pattern increases visual excitement by enriching surface interest.
Artworks Process
VISUAL RESEARCH
The idea exploration for the 2nd artworks seems more clear and I decided to do an artwork on contrast and repetition. As I having thoughts on sending a yellow tulips as a birthday gift to my friend, I get an exploration on doing repetition of tulips.
I gained some researches on repetition and how to make the tulips to be contrast.
IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION
Firstly, I get the ideas from figure above. The idea of having both 2 colours of tulips in a bouquet, shows a sense of contrast. So, I decided to do an artworks on using two different colours of tulips to create a sense of contrast which one colour (white) having multiples stalks whereas the another (yellow) having only one stalk, to present the contrast (the importance of the yellow tulips) :
Figure 14 : Draft Sketch 1
Although I only progressed as draft, I showed the draft to Dr. Charles and received some feedbacks :
FEEDBACK
Good effort! You can have lots of white tulips with different textures here and only one tulips stand out.
After receiving the feedbacks by Dr. Charles, I decided to do some improvement on adding more white tulips with varieties patterns to create a sense of repetition (the repetition of white tulips).
Figure 15 : Draft Sketch 2
FEEDBACK
The title of the artwork should be "the yellow tulips", you can create a story about the yellow tulips. The suggestion is to add on more branches, and let the tulips bounced out naturally. I like the design because you are using varieties shapes of white tulips to show the difference between them and also some of the repeated white tulips too. It's showed dominance, focal point, repetition in it.
Then, I try to make the tulips "bounced" more naturally instead of "squeezing" them in a bunch.
Figure 16 : Draft Sketch 3
I also add on one white tulip beside to make the artwork more interesting. It is because without the "additional white tulip", audience may think about someone is holding the bunch of tulips (white + yellow tulips) or the tulips are just placing in a glass, etc. But if having the "additional white tulip", audience may think more about, "why there is an additional white tulips at side? Is there any significance? "
My idea on adding the "additional white tulip" at side is to make the audience perceive more on my artwork.
And, my idea is "the yellow tulip" is replacing the "place" of the "additional white tulip". The initial location for the yellow tulip should be at the side whereas the "additional white tulip" should be among the white tulips, showing the social competition in the society. Although your starting line is different, as long as you work hard you can integrate into the society. Similarly, despite your extensive history and expertise, if you do not work hard, you will be replaced by someone who does.
“Everyone is special, unique and extraordinary. The hard work valued the success."
Figure 17 : Draft Sketch 4
After, I try to add on some effects to make the artwork looks more "paintings" instead of too digital.
FEEDBACK
Beautiful, nicely balanced!
Figure 18 : Reference of bouquet
I love the concept of having a card in the bouquet, which showing some blessings. So, I remained the ideas of the card and create the outcome :
Figure 19 : Draft Sketch 5
Figure 20 : Final outcome "extraordinary sunshine"
I remained the idea on having the cards and insert a quotation on it.
"You're the most extraordinary", which is always my quotation.
Figure 21 : Close up - card
named it < Extraordinary sunshine > means "creating own sunshine, you're the extraordinarily", a motivating statement.
Sunshine = yellow tulips, sun is yellow coloured. ☀️
Extraordinary = the yellow tulips is the most unique among the white tulips. 🌷
Figure 22 : Contrast on the yellow tulips
Contrast : The unique on the yellow tulips
Repetition : varieties patterns and angles on the white tulips.
Figure 23 : Idea Analysis
FINAL OUTCOME AND SHORT RATIONALE
Figure 25 : Final outcome "extraordinary sunshine", PDF
The final outcome shows a bouquet of tulips with sage green coloured wrapping. The artwork is created by using the main principles of repetition and contrast.
The variety of patterns, positions, and textures of the tulips show the sense of repetition, whereas the principle of contrast is used to portray the importance of the bouquet in this artwork and also contrast the presence of yellow tulips in the white tulips. People may perceive the importance of the yellow in the artwork and start to imagine their story.
In addition, the principles of harmony are shown in the artwork too. The same colour themes show the sense of harmony in which all the elements in the artwork fit together. Moreover, the concept of having the card in the bouquet, as I referenced, slightly creates the principle of word. You're the most extraordinary". The words on the card are able to relate to the ideas in the artwork, in which the yellow is extraordinary.
REFLECTION
As this is my first module in design courses, it seems to have less knowledge for me in the design world. Overall, I'm not very good in drawing, but I'm grateful for this opportunity to learn more about Procreate. I really enjoyed myself while creating the artwork and exploring the variety of design principles. From the exercise, I know that a piece of designed artwork is formed by multiple design principles, making it feel active and interesting.
In addition, I even gained some ideas about myself. For example, the "tomato" artwork was my idea because my parents were always by my side and fully supported my decision no matter what. The idea makes me feel that I love and thank my parents so much. Also, the creation of "yellow tulips" is me saying to myself, "although you do not having super duper well-done drawing skills, if I work hard, I may create something extraordinary too." The idea makes me want to be more hardworking and put more effort into, making my degree journey more interesting and valuable.
Overall, this exercise seems like a chance for me to explore something special and unique. To me, it's more than an exercise.

So glad that you have explored your framing techniques and sense of focus. Never think space as empty space. Space is either figure or ground. both play roles to elevate each other. in your design solutions, you can see how deciding on placement, alignment and space contributes to design context! Well done!
